Like a new truck
Ever since I bought my F-450 a few months ago it vibrated and made a noise.
I chalked it up to knobby winter tires and it being a 450. I never drove it over 110 kms because it vibrated . Yesterday I was going on a long trip and it seemed to get worse so I took out my hubs to see if that helped. I leave them in usually all winter on the bush roads. That didn't help and it got worse , very worse it started banging in the frontend , I pulled over but the highway was icey and busy so I kept going slowly looking for a place to pull off. There was a load snap and a bang and the noise quit. I made it to a driveway and pulled off and crawled underneath , the front ujoint/ball joint on the front driveshaft is floppy around barley hanging on. So anyway I think that's been vibrating since day one and the loud cluck I heard was the hubs finally disengaging. I think the hubs were stuck in and the driveshaft was still turning. I made sure the driveshaft wasn't turning and carried on. Went 700km and the truck drove like a new 1/2 ton. I couldn't believe how nice it was to drive , it was smooth and seemed to even handle better. So even though its going to cost $300 or so to fix its going to be well worth it. |
Glad you figured it out, but what a way to do it!:D By the way, I love the '08-'10 450s!!

Sweet! Glad you found it...not the best way I guess but never the less...I'll have to check mine as mine vibes bad from 85 to 100 km but at 85 it feels like a wheels going to fly off! I just assumed it was a bad wheel balance but it maybe this as well. :-jammin

Good find. Not ideal troubleshooting but sometimes the part has to fail before noise can be pinpointed.

This didn't turn out as good as I thought it was going to.
Its more than a ujoint , the whole end of the driveshaft is wrecked so need a new yoke and who knows what else. Bought a driveshaft from autowrecker and it was almost as bad as mine. Am getting a new yoke welded on another driveshaft now. I can see its going to cost a bunch more than a ujoint.................. |
That really s*ucks.....would you just replace the unjoints then as a maintenance item now knowing what you do?

$850.00 and good to go again...............
