Are you happy soo far with the posies |
Awesome build. I would love to find something like that around here for $600.
|
Very nice! Only recently have I started to appreciate Rat Rods. After my F350 restore I have a 69 VW Squareback that I'm going to do either a low & slow or rat rod theme.

Ok I was thinking about the short & smooth, but I havenīt made up my mind yet. The Posies are a bit more expensive?
Are you happy soo far with the posies I was debating whether to go with the mono leafs or multi leafs and decided on the multi I guess because I wanted more adjustability in height. I feel like the rear is a little tall still but I can always pull a leaf or two later on. |
BEAUTIFUL! Subscribed.

Looks like this is gonna be awesome when you get it on the road. Cool already, nice score!

made my own frame plates using some poster board templates then transferring it to some 1/8" plate material
i'm going to drill holes and weld in sleeves for 1/2" bolts through both sides of the frame for the motor crossmember http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...ordproject.jpg http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...102_172055.jpg |
Nice welds! This really makes me want to get an old truck.. I mean, it doesn't get much more simple then that.

a few more progress pics from over the weekend
made a patch for the fuel filler hole, i'm going to run a fuel cell in the bed, but with a twist, stay tuned for that also you can see where i took a big wire wheel to the cab floor and firewall, eventually going to paint it and dynamat the crap out of it so i don't have the steel drum effect going on when it's up and running http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...103_154155.jpg patched a section of the cab as well, had a few holes rusted through it http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...103_144023.jpg this was the old master cylinder reservoir access hole in the floor, going with a firewall mounted unit http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...103_211408.jpg and patched the fuel line hole in the cab http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...103_211424.jpg |
finished up the motor mount today
it all came out pretty good http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/1551/80gj.jpg i hadn't welded the flanged tube side to the bent tube in this pic yet, but I assure you i did after i will flip the bolts at final assembly so the threads are toward the motor http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/8066/6yrd.jpg inside of the frame ground flush for the crossmember http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/2866/mvyi.jpg outside of the frame i ground the outer ends of the sleeves after the picture to give more surface area for the washer http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3926/qx7t.jpg |
How much spring travel do you have left in the front? With the motor in? They are suppose to lower 3", right?
Looking good! |
i'll have to check this weekend to get an accurate number, but it seemed there was still a good amount of travel
and luck would have it that one of the sleeves ended up running really close to the old bumpstop hole so i need to shift those over just slightly and weld a nut in from the bottom to attach them again since i've lost access to that section of frame after boxing it |
Correct me if I am wrong but the front springs looks like "dual flex" ? You mentioned super slides erlier?
|
apparently they're both, we got them from speedway motors and they have them labeled with both names, dual flex, super slides
these are the exact ones we're using Posies Super Slide Springs D152F 1948-52 Ford Pickup Drop Front Springs - Speedway Motors, America's Oldest Speed Shop |
little progress, painted the transmission and new alternator came in, I also placed a decent sized parts order last week mostly drivetrain stuff so that'll be coming along soon enough

Looking good! i can see this settling slightly more with time and completed assembly of the rest of the truck if i find it bottoming out i can always shave the bumpstops a little |
nice progress, subscribed to thread.
|
Wow Thanks
Thatīs not a hole lot when you have the front clip left?? I googled and found this: Chevy 350 about 575 lbs th350 about 125 (short tail) My Y block is about 625 lbs my 3 speed with OD I dont have a clue on what the weight is, but I guess around 100 lbs. That wont give me a hole lot of spring travel on my truck????? |
So here's my version of fuel tank mounting, i had a plastic fuel cell left over from another project so I figured why not use it.
I didn't want to mount it under the bed and it's small enough to where it won't take up the inside of the bed too much and I don't really plan on hauling much if at all anyway. But I didn't want some out of place black plastic fuel cell just sitting in the bed, so I came up with the idea of finding an old wood trunk to place the cell in. I picked this one up off craigslist for $90, should look pretty cool I think. http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...q_600x450.jpeg |
What a great idea! The chest is very fitting as well. I like it. :-X22
|
i'm also going to do my own wood bed using old siding from a friends barn that's still in really good shape, so it should all flow together nicely
|
as promised, we have parts :-jammin

some weekend updates these are lug nuts i got off eBay, also started fabricating a seat mount for the bench seat im
going to use, it's out of an early '90s ranger and fits perfectly width wise just need to build up the height a little also painted the front calipers and assembled the rear brakes as well http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...117_161616.jpg |
have a couple new items...
bid and won an original 1948 owner's manual, thought it'd be a cool touch at car shows or just to have in the glovebox http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...mZ3g60_3-1.jpg also began work on the bed, i measured out and built a frame that im going to lay the wood planks in and set the whole thing in place as one unit once it's ready http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...125_103151.jpg http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...125_103126.jpg |
Sweet Project
Looking forward to the rest of your build! You do some great work!
|
thanks, i'm looking forward to it also
|
finally getting some consistent good weather so worked on getting the body together this weekend
and as far as nuts and bolts go, I invested in some black button head allen cap screws and serrated flange locknuts for basically the entire truck, a mix of 1/4, 5/16, and 3/8x3/4 to 1" long, they suit the look I'm going for very well http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...8fce70abcf.jpg |
|
I've been putting in some serious time on the weekends and got my rear ride height set I ended up pulling leaves out of the rear pack to get rid of the rake.
I also moved the rear axle back 1" using the multiple holes drilled in the spring pad and u bolt plate, it centers it in the wheel well better. My power steering conversion kit came in too, I went with the bolt on system sold through Performance Online. The goal is to have the truck driving by the end of May. http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...gua1/ford5.jpg http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...330_174120.jpg http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...330_174153.jpg |
Progress going well and deadline for May seems within reason at the pace you seem to get things done on weekends. Nice Work!!!!!!

got the radiator mocked up, traded my friend a truck tool box for the radiator who ran it in his small block powered sprint car when he used to race, it's all copper and brass so it has a cool old look to it
i built a lower cradle in the stock location and lined it with rubber to prevent abrasion but have to make some custom brackets come off the factory core support and attach to the four studs on the radiator http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...409_132000.jpg the third captured nut was missing on one side of the core support that's why the bracket doesn't extend all the way down to it, I have all three on the other side http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...409_132011.jpg also picked up this original FoMoCo Unity spotlight for only $50 shipped and it works http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...408_030410.jpg http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...408_030510.jpg |
So a lot has been happening over the passed couple weeks, I'll just explain with each picture.
Got the radiator all mounted up with a simple bracket I built, using the factory support, the studs on the radiator, and a cradle below so it's not hanging freely. It's very secure but still flexible. http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...412_010525.jpg All isolated with rubber. http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...412_010539.jpg Then ran all my coolant lines, the two going towards the fender will connect to the heater core and I'm going to block of the water neck with a plate and gasket. http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...413_140757.jpg Also got some sound deadening material similar to dynamat but generic and cheaper, I noticed the biggest difference in the doors where I applied a 24x18" sheet to the inside outer skin. http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...412_021544.jpg http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...412_021604.jpg Here is the rear bumper I will be using, it's actually a front off a '55 F100 that my buddy's dad gave me, I simply centered it up and drilled four holes to bolt on the shorty bumper brackets from Midwest Early Ford. http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...414_133729.jpg And last but not least for now, I got my front shocks mounted up using the original mounts but flipping them and drilling two new holes because my motor crossmember is where they used to mount. I'm using stock length shocks for a '53+ because that's all Rockauto had along with rears, but the length works well and I'm doing custom lower mounts for the rear axle but didn't get a picture. You can also see the bolt on power rack and pinion kit from Performance Online which is all hooked up, including my later model GM column that I kept from an older project. This kit may seem a little pricey but all things considered it's absolutely complete. That being said, out of the box it would not work with my disc conversion so I did need to modify the steering arms slightly that come with it for both systems to work together. http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...415_112737.jpg |
finished up the rear suspension tonight and began work on the window channels
http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...417_223620.jpg |
Got my through-the-fender exhaust exits done and mocked up a black tip to see how it'll all look.
They pop out in front of both rear tires just behind the running boards and the opening faces forward. Made the trim rings on my buddies lathe and used six 10-24 button head cap screws to bolt them in place. I know I cut two 3.5" holes through original vintage steel but that's the beauty of metal, you can always add more later. driver---------------------------------------------------passenger http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...423_140132.jpghttp://i725.photobucket.com/albums/w...423_140052.jpg |
Exhaust is finished and ran all my brake lines also added a trim piece to the rear of the bed to cover what would be a 4x4 support beam.

Dude that thing is looking SICK!!! I love your build style too.
So are you gonna stick with the "patina" look or what? |
