Chips or tuners
Right now I have a edge juice with attuitude but it doesn't give me the horsepower I want, did I mess up by going with a chip? What is better for horsepower a chip or tuner and what kind?

You get to do some good reading here to find out!
I had the edge juice/attitude - worked well enough, but did not know what I was missing with a chip like DP Tuner, PHP, others. Do a search of this site and read up. Hard to go wrong with the recommendations here. Welcome! |
Not sure about edge. I have had a chip and now have tunes and my tunes have more power than my superchips did along with being able to switch between stock, daily, towing and decel tune-ON THE FLY.

Dieselpower22, can you post the details of your truck so we know where you stand: stock, what mods are in place, gauges, etc. Its good to find out if your truck is 100% before adding power.

GET RID OF THAT EDGE ASAP !!!!!! Long story short and many moons ago, new to the diesel world i got a Edge Juice w/ Attitude. The actual module that sat under the hood like edge said to mount FRIED 3 times. Once pulling my 16' box trailer through town. Another while sitting at a red light and the other Turning left across 6 lanes with traffic coming. Truck Just died. I unplugged it and bam back to the norm. Not to mention 1 replacement monitor.
Edge Replaced every "faulty" module and on the 3rd one i told them they were junk. They sent me the edge evo with the monitor. I think that was the cause of my tranny failure but not 100 %. It gave good power but only ran it in 80hp. After reading and saving my $$$$$ i finally went with a DP Tuner. It is a night and day difference than the cookie cutter brands like edge, super chip etc. I did keep the evo monitor for my gauges and to retrieve DTC. All in all great info on FTE on this topic. What kinda power you looking for ? what mods have you done so far ? whats the purpose of ur vehicle ? and do you have gauges ? I will see if i can find a write up to link with some discussion on chips/tuners etc |
My goal is 400 HP, all Iv done is 4in exhaust and the edge chip

400 isn't that hard or expensive, but it will run a couple grand for sticks, tunes, and air. 500 is expensive.
To explain really quick some of the terminology: -tuner: person or company that writes calibrations. -Calibrations: the data that the truck runs off of. -chip: hardware that contains calibrations that plugs directly to the PCM. Usually are switchable on the fly. Truck reads calibrations directly from the chip, nothing is changed on the PCM itself. Common models are TS style chip, DP chip, hydra, infinity, etc... (Hydra and infinity are fairly new technologies from PHP and DP respectively, and are kind of hybrid chip/programmers). -flash programmer: hardware that rewrites the calibrations that are stored to the PCM. Not able to a switch on the fly, usually takes several minutes to change from one calibration to the next. Usually have diagnostic features. Some can contain calibrations from a tuner of choice. |

Good explanation of tuners and chips. I would also factor in a new built tranny for 400hp if it were me too, about $5000.

Well, yeah. Although I think the HD will do ok at 400. It's about $3k.
Transmission, sticks, turbo, chip, custom tunes, and air throughput alone will set you back a bit. There was an article in a diesel magazine that said 400HP will ultimately cost between $5K and $10K, after all the upgrades/repairs are conducted for a balanced/reliable DD. I can't argue with this... predicated on the pothole on my posterior, positioned in proximity of where my pesos were previously parked. |
As said 400+ hp will cost you $10k+ I have at least 6k$ into mine and I should be aprox 425 hp and I'm still running my factory 235k mile transmission. Trans is gona be 4-5k. If i push it next may have to be, head studs, pushrods and springs. Mo money! Power is fun, not cheap!

I ran my Juice w/ Attitude for a long time. My problem with it, it didn't do anything for the transmission. Start turning up the power levels and I could feel it slipping. I was much happier with my Diablo Predator programmer. Ended up just using the Attitude monitor for gauges for a long time.
I liked being able to change power levels on the fly with the Edge over the Diablo flash programmer. With a chip and switch you can do both... |
