I have a 2012 F250 with 32000+ miles and absolutely no problems. I left this morning with a little over a quarter tank of diesel to check on a crew about 20mi away. I came back to the home ranch and stopped by our diesel tank to fill up.

I put in 18.8 gallons of diesel with no problems, although I did top off the tank. I drive about 200 feet and I receive a red error message that and some angry beeps. The error read Stop Safely Now! I pull slightly off the road and the truck immediately dies. I remove the key and then try to restart and get the same error message. Call the dealership and they tell me to wait 15min and try again, if it still doesnt turn over to get it towed in.

I come back 15min later and the truck still gives me the error message. I call AAA and they send out a tow truck. When the tow gets to the ranch, the truck starts fine. I'm a little embarrassed and explain what happened. He says that air probably got in the fuel line and the computer killed the truck. I still have a check engine light on so I head to the dealership to get it checked out. When I get there they tell me that theyre hammered and wouldnt be able to get me in until Thursday. They also say that if it was air in the fuel line that the check engine light would clear itself.

Sure enough about an hour later the check engine light turned itself off. Has anyone else experienced this? I have limited knowledge on diesel engines, is there anything I can do to avoid this in the future? Thanks.

get a code reader and get the codes. even though the light is off, there should still be a stored code. Autozone will read codes for free. Harbor Freight has readers pretty reasonable. I would want to know.

not air in the lines..a EGT sensor is the issue. Air in the lines would have made it run rough at best.

You still had fuel.

EGT sensor reads high. So after the truck cooled down you could start it.

Only way to know for sure though is a code reader.

EGT sensor , I think also . I love them , they make me lots of money ! Hate it for the owners . I have seen many go bad . Design sucks . Also prone to damage from offroad use . I have seen cornstalks ruin them !

Interesting, I'll try and pick up a reader today. I take it off road almost daily for work. Nothing extreme, but a lot of dirt, mud, and rocks. I'll keep you guys posted with what I find.

Why could he read the code through Engineering Mode?

It looks like you have a KR. If you hold the left arrow on the steering wheel down while the key is in "off" hold it down, turn key to run (don't start truck) and be patient for a second the screen in the center dash will say engineering mode. Use the down arrow to scroll to the 3rd screen it will show any codes there for free.

Agreed, the stop safely now is usually one of these :-arrgh:-arrgh:-arrgh:-arrgh

Well it just happened again. I'm going to check the code right now. The scariest part is the truck dies immediately. I was loading up my trailer and about to haul a tractor down the freeway. This wouldve been extremely hazardous if it didnt happen while I was still on the ranch. No way I can trust this truck until I take it in.

Update: When I try holding down the Left or the Down button before start it just boots straight to the Stop Safely Now error message.

Another option is an Edge CTS or similar type of display monitor.

They will retrieve any DTC codes through the OBDII port and display them. I used mine several times on my 2006 6.0L to call my service advisor and ask what the code meant. On my 2006 truck, I even used it to clear any codes that were keeping my truck from starting. Haven't had any codes on my 2011, So have not used it on this truck.

You guys nailed it! EGT is busted, going to take a day or two to get the part in. Its been brutal driving around the '02 450 flatbed. Cant wait to get my truck back. Thanks again guys!

Just a program note...I think on the passenger battery there is a jumper like on the 6.4 that you can use to bypass and start the truck.

Dont know for certain and ...use at your own risk.

:) Glad you got it figured out ! I would buy spares , a code reader , the proper wrench and keep them in the truck ! Along with some PB or WD . If you have it long , it will happen again :( .
