Mercury Mariner Problem
I have a 2005 Mercury Mariner. It started out by making a loud clunk sound every now and then, but now it seems like something is binding up to the point where the vehicle doesn't want to move. When I'm parked on a slight slope and put the vehicle in neutral it will even stop on it's own. I get noise coming from the passenger side front wheel. I jacked the front passenger side up but can't turn the wheel. Right now I feel the car is undriveable. Anybody have any ideas what the problem might be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could be several thing.
Broken axle Brake pads Brake rotor Brake caliper Best bet is to jack it up and remove the wheel. If you don't see anything take a few pics and post them. |
If its the brake holding up the rim should get pretty hot.Try driven and see if the left and right seem to be close in temp.To spin the tire you need to raise both front tires off the ground I think.

Plan on checking it out this weekend. Temp outside is in the 20s right now. Too Freakin Cold.

OK. I couldn't resist. I jacked the whole front end up with both wheels off the ground and was able to turn the wheel with NO noise. I took the tire off and checked the brakes, rotor and caliber. Everything looks ok. I'm thinking about putting the front end back down on the ground and jacking the whole back end up and check for noise. Thinking the problem might be the CV joint between the 2 drive shafts. Any other ideas are welcome.
