P.S. Forgot to say that Damm cluster set a CEL today. It lost communications with the PCM.
But it seems to be working now.

Bet you a hundred dollar bill if you put a 35 on that thin fiberglass roof it won't take 6 months before it goes through it. Ben just got an extra top for his 79 and those things are flimsy. Just build a bumper and integrate the tire carrier into it. And unless you're running a welded or locked center section then you can use a factory size spare without issue to get it wherever you're going to get the 35 fixed. Joewelds can explain structural integrity of fab/design concerning tensile and yield strengths of the metal required to hang the weight of a spare of any given weight. If Joe can make the meet with cash in hand I'll bring the parts he wants and some extra stuff, will do what I can to make the meet anyways, the Roundtable in Kirkland?

that works as long as he isn't somewhere that needs 4x4. ask me how i know what happens when you mix sizes while in 4x4 mode - not pretty. but i guess he could just toss a spare 35 in the back on the rare occasion he takes it off road, and have a factory size spare mounted somewhere for the rest of the time...

The tire wouldn't be touching the fiberglass. And if I got a good rack, it would have more than 4 mounting places to distribute the weight. I'm not talking about adding some bars on top and laying the tire on the roof, I'm talking about those basket things that people have. I was talking about these kind

Maybe smaller though, something that will screw into the fiberglass and come off with the top when that comes off. Then use a sealer or silicon to seal the bolts so no leaks etc... I know these 78-9 tops are flimsy in the middle but the sides and corners feel solid.

$650 for that? Looks like there is a lot of stress put on the single hinge. Plus from the looks of it, it utilizes the hitch receiving box yeah? That's kind of like that hitch mount basket, it's going to get kind of tweaked over time after opening and closing it.

the bumper is the way to go

A custom bumper? How would I get the tire mounted and still be able to open the tailgate with the tire off?

crash1 03-26-2013 09:43 PM

build a custom bumper and every time you want your tail gate open you swing your tire out
