Good luck Sean I hope it all goes well.

And yes I am buying some loud hookers with my tax money :D haha. That's weird though that machining the heads made the intake not line up... I would have never though about something like that.

joshofalltrades 02-12-2013 02:35 PM

yeah, my machinist made a comment that he hoped the intake would fit after milling the heads and block that far. i guess he's seen it before. makes sense though, moving the heads down means also moving them in a little, and that was enough to throw things off.
i just got it torqued down, so that challenge is over.
so i plan to get the injectors, plugs, and IP on there before i have to run off to an appointment.

GruesomeJeans 02-12-2013 03:30 PM

Yeah I suppose it makes sense. Well good luck with that, I just got done poking around the local junkyard, didn't find what I needed.

Thanks for the info Anthony, glad to hear Sean is doing ok so far.

joshofalltrades 02-15-2013 03:52 PM

well boys, my engine as almost alive :)
i didn't even bother to bleed the injector lines, but after two 20-second periods of cranking, its firing on a couple cylinders. gotta give the starter 5 minutes to cool down, and the battery charger time to do its thing, and pour some more coffee, but its almost there :)

GruesomeJeans 02-15-2013 04:18 PM

That's good. I started my drum work but had to take a break so that I could take the drums to Napa and get them turned BUT I found out that they are too far gone. They can't legally turn the drums anymore so I get to use these till I can buy new ones. One thing after another. But I did get my headers and mufflers today so I'm happy.

joshofalltrades 02-15-2013 04:30 PM

cool. mine is running now :-bigparty

during the project i had drained the rear tank looking for a cause of my fuel problems back there, got it all up, and put 2 gallons of diesel in it, and first fired up the truck on that. well after about a minute i stalled out and wouldn't fire back up. switched to the front, cranked for 15 seconds, and she came alive. now she's running like she should
so i've still gotta sort out that rear tank issue, and i've still gotta put the body back together up front, but she's alive :)

Good to hear, I am also in good graces with the automotive god as my brakes are done without too much cussing and yelling. I do regret not buying the tools to do this. But all is well, I test drove it and it seems to be working as it should. I will have to buy drums eventually though since mine were too worn to turn them. Tomorrow, I should be heading to a friend's house in Black Diamond so that will put them too the test.

i've made a bit more progress this afternoon. got a bigger tranny cooler installed, with a fan mounted right on it. my old one was pretty small, roughly 7x9" IIRC, and was only mounted with those plastic pins through the radiator core. awhile back i found a diesel van with a much bigger cooler, about 12x12 and a good bit thicker. i also had a 12" pusher fan, which used to be mounted on one corner of the radiator, with the intent of helping when i was getting hot according to my lying factory gage... well i decided to put that fan to good use by mounting it on that big tranny cooler, so when i am towing or really working it up some mountain roads, i can flip the switch and have nothing to worry about. https://www.dropbox.com/s/hq58fhgmbb...2018.30.14.jpg

after that, i got the bumper and stuff back on, and once i drag my butt back outside i'll finish up with the grill and all the rest of that stuff

GruesomeJeans 02-15-2013 11:27 PM

Wow that fan fits the cooler pretty well. Almost like it was ment for it huh?

I got my brakes all buttoned up

It wasn't so bad but very messy.

joshofalltrades 02-15-2013 11:30 PM

looking good.
they tend to be pretty messy cause all the dust has nowhere to go. disk brakes at least have enough wind over them to carry it all away, so they're a lot cleaner. its good to see that you got it done

GruesomeJeans 02-15-2013 11:41 PM

Yeah, it looked like these haven't been cleaned in a long time. Rather than make a mess all over the gravel, I used a box with cat litter in it. It worked better than I though.

I also got my headers in today. Can't wait to put them on :D

today i drove the van about 80 miles with no problems, its running great, and feels like a whole new beast. it finally shifts when it should, apparently the vacuum regulator valve on the old IP was bad, as thats the only thing that really would have changed it between before the rebuild and now. it used to stay in 2nd until well above 40mph, now it'll shift into 3rd before i hit 30 if i'm nice to it. it runs like a champ, and i'm happy with it - so yes, i will have it for the meet next weekend :)

GruesomeJeans 02-17-2013 02:22 AM

Good to hear Josh, job well done :) Today I was driving me and some friends back from the Black Diamond/Auburn area and as I was driving it felt weird, when I would come to a stop it had hardly any power when I would go forward. I had experienced this before when my tranny guts were shot and I had to get a rebuild. I pulled over and plated with the shifter and I realized I left it in 2nd instead of Drive so it wasn't downshifting properly or upshifting... I was relieved to figure out that my C-6 wasn't slipping again.. Though it is probably due for a fluid change, a whole rebuild would be crazy.
