97' 2.3 into 91' ranger..... crank sens issues
 

Hopefully someone out there has the magic answer.
recently i decided i was going to put a motor into my 91 ranger.
bought a 97' 2.3 unaware that the crank sensors would be totally different..
my question is..... can the 97 crank sensor be spliced into and work with my 91 harness??

'97 uses EDIS which is a stand alone ignition controller, similar to the DIS system on your old motor. However the signal that EDIS uses is different and incompatible with the one that DIS uses. Without significant changes, there is no way the EDIS setup will work with your existing wiring. You at the very least would need a way to reprogram the stock computer, and even that may be insufficient.

To use a '97 engine, you are goning to need to figure out how to use the old sensors on the new block. This should actually be a fairly straightforward affair. If the mounting bolts are missing, you will need to drill and tap the block to mount the sensor, and you will need the crank pulley off the old motor. If yours uses the cam synchronizer, you will need that too, but in order for it to work, you need a special alignment tool. Basically you will need to swap everything that is different between the motors.

So the next question is, who sold you the motor telling you it was compatible. Any good auto salvage yard can check compatibility.

Can you go back to the boneyard and get the PCM and ignition module (if so equiped) for "that" engine????}>
