best oil for 6.8 triton v10
 

good morning from arizona.it is a lovley 97 digrees at 727am. i am getting ready to do a full scale oil change on my 2000 350 sd.i know not a big deal for most of you but for me its a frustrating task. anyhow i have been reading on here that 6-7 qourts is what it should take. i also found a dip stick thread and am going to check that also . my qwestion is. what weight should i use for this truck here in az.i drive dureing the morning and then again at the hottest part of the day. some times its 117 digrees out. also synthetic or normal oil?

Your 2000 speced 5w-30 from the factory and that is what I would use. (Use 5w-30 in my 04')

As for oil brand, synth, dino and etc it really doesn't matter much. It just important you change it when required. I use a synthetic motor oil which is usually Pennzoil Platinum because it fairly inexpensive and is a good oil. I use Mobil 1, Valv Synpower and others from time to time if it is on sale but mostly the PP. A semi synthetic blend like the Motorcraft oil will be more than fine. Just use a quality name brand oil.

For the oil filter I would recommend the Motorcraft Fl-820s or Purolator Pure One. Both have the required silicone antidrainback valve.

I run Amsoil in all my vehicles here in Phoenix.

I use Mobil 1 5W-20 synthetic in mine. It calls for 5/20.

My next oil change, I'm going to use a trick I learned from this forum in removing the oil filter without making a mess. Use a 2 liter plastic bottle with the top and shoulder of the bottle cut away. Loosen the oil filter with the filter wrench before the oil starts oozing out. Then put the bottle over the filter like a sleeve and unscrew the filter in the bottle. As the oil oozes out, the bottle will catch it until the whole filter drops into the bottle. Then wipe the mount clean.

neat trick.ill have to try that next time. i gota say the oil that ran down my arm and into my arm pit felt kinda GGREAZZZY hahahaha

I use 5W20 in my 01 V-10. It specs 5W20 and have been using FoMoCo 5W20 semi-synthetic. And....6 quarts.

Just pick a brand and stick with it, also make sure like others stated use only the fl820s or purolator pure one. Another trick to not making a mess is, take a small punch and make a hole on the lowest part of the filter and let it drain into The pan that way! I guess it's different for diesel owners who have 2 qts in the filter :D

I usually just crack the filter open and let it drain into the pan for a minute. Once is slows down or stops spewing oil unscrew it off. U might get a little oil on your hand but its usually ok because you already have some on your fingers from removing the drain plug.

I use 5W-30 on my 5.4 because that is what Ford says to use. Next oil change, I'm going to try 0W-30 for reasons outlined on BobIsTheOil website.

i use 5-20 synth..

if you switch to Synth oil, expect to lose a litre of oil or so between changes.

the synth oils seem to more likely to drop oil level over a oil change life vs. dino oil.

just something to be aware of and keep an eye on every now and then.

Do you have a good reference for that? I have considered that also and just wondering what the oil guys are saying. Thanks

Basically, 0W-30 and 5W-30 oil is the same viscosity at operating temperature. It's with a cold start that the 0W is less viscous and more desirable.

mine will have rotella 5 w 40 when i change oilnext its a new to me truck.I used to work for a paving company explors to f 450 totly ford fleet they ran delo 400 15w40 the gasers would sound like hell on below 0 starts they sold at 150000 miles allways still running good still. I ran 5w40 in a 05 f150 w/5.4 and no issues for 80000 miles towing a skid loader had enough go but scarry on handleing & stoping but no motor problems
