Has anyone had to change their shift cable?
Went to pick up my daughter at school to take her to doctor to cast her arm, she fell and broke it yesterday, when I tried to put Ex in reverse i had nothing. I was stuck in drive face into a parking spot and no way to move. So I had vehicle towed to my cousins who is an ase mechanic. He told me the cable was on the header and it looked like it had burned through. I probably need a new cable.
So, has anyone had to change their cable and know what is involved to do it? Tools and time involved? Thanks |
Shifter Cable Installed
Well, I jumped in and changed out my old shift cable for the new one. No big deal, had it done in about 35 minutes without having a clue as to what to do.
If I had to do it again would probably take me about 15 min. Here is what I did: 1. Unhook cable retainer from shifter under dash--need flat blade screw driver 2. unhook cable from bracket under dash--need flat head screwdriver 3. pry out plastic cable retainer from floorboard--need flathead screwdriver 4. pry out rubber grommet from floorboard--need flathead screwdriver 5. get underneath truck remove cable from bracket--I used flathead screwdriver to push in on one side of squeeze fitting to release from bracket 6. pry cable retainer off transmission knob--I used flathead screwdriver 7. pulled cable out from inside of truck because of rubber grommet To install: I did the reverse of above. I also twist tied the cable to something underneath truck to route away from header to avoid cable laying on header and melting in the future. I do need to adjust cable at tranny because i have some slop on the PRND21 Have to wait for the wife to get home and run through the gears while I am under truck. Pricing: I bought cable from Ford, $83 and change out the door after tax. Found it on ebay for about $61 after shipping but my EX is daily driver so I didn't have time to wait for the cable to be shipped.
