Starts, runs, dies after 20 min
 

Have a 1960 f250 with a 223. Truck will start and run fine for 20-30 min and then it dies. Will eventually restart, sometimes not till the following day. Also seems to getting pretty hot. Cleaned fuel filter and put on rebuilt carb. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

check the fuel line that runs in the tank. my 60 f100 did that for a while till i cleaned that line. and also pressurize the tank periodically by blowing into the filler spout to get a good stream of fuel getting in the lines. and if its getting hot you might have some air in the cooling system i would try burping it to see if that helps.

First thing I'd do is see whether it lost spark or fuel when it died. There are some pretty simple diagnostic steps we can walk you through to avoid the old "let's throw new parts at until it's fixed" method.

The coil could be getting hot and opening up but I would tend to lean toward feul line/fuel tank/filter stuff.

As was mentioned, tell us what it is doing or not doing when it quits. They are a fairly simple engine to work thru.

i have a question. when it dies is there fuel in the filter?

Thanks for all the replies. There is fuel in the filter when it dies. Just checked and there is currently no spark, started and ran for 20 min earlier today.

Could also be some other connection that is corroded and vibrates apart while it is running. Later after it sits, it can touch just enough to run again. Where the harness plugs into the firewall is a perfect place for something like that to occur. I did mention the coil earlier but they often get the blame first. Then you have to spend the time to find the real problem.

If you don't own a test light, go buy one. Start checking for voltage at the coil + with the key on. If there isn't juice there then backtrack to the switch. If there is juice at the coil + and you have no spark, check for juice right at the points, they will have to be open for it to light up. Also on the wire to the points, the coil -, it should blink the light if you check while the engine is cranking.

I'd like to find those $10 parts store coils, last one I bought was more like $40.

Give China time to get the price down, they already have the quality down to $10! :(
