'97 F150, 4x4 Off Road, 5.4. Ordered in July of '96, delivered October. One of the first half tons with the 5.4. Original owner.

198,000 miles. 130,000 local, 68,000 highway, 30,000+ pulling a ton or more.

The motor still doesn't burn oil. Never added a quart between changes at 4,000 miles. Original transmission.

My only beef is the rear end. It's junk. Always has been. Ford should have replaced the entire axle, but opted to put in a set of gears. Over and over again. Gone through 6 sets. Trying to figure out if I want to dump $2,500 to rebuild a junk rear end or get a used axle from Pic N Pull.

the wife's truck 01 f250 2wd 5.4l has 209k on it and still counting, original timing chains. she burns about a quart and a half of oil every 3k but she still pulls a race car on trailer every saturday with no problems. great truck

My 2005 F150 Lariat CrewCab has 110K miles. Original owner. Use every day in local driving and about 4K or 5K miles per year towing a 7100# travel trailer... Normal oil change and service every 4K miles. Original Plugs, runs like a top... Only maintenance is brake job at 80K miles. If someone is looking for a used one, I would say anything that looks like it has been taken care of and has less than say 100K miles would be a great truck with another 100K trouble free miles..

Mustang6147 01-20-2013 03:23 PM

My 06, 5.4 in a SD 4x4 has 77000 trouble free miles.

I have changed the fuel filter 10 times, tranny fluid and filter 2x Axle fluid 1x, and antifreeze 2x, transfer case 1x. greased my caliper slides more then I can remember. and am still runnin on the original BFG's rotated every 5000.

I enjoy doing maint on my truck

I also opted to have Ford do the plugs at 50,000 miles while it was under warranty because of the known plug issue.

94 K on a 2001 Expedition AWD with the off road package. The only issue we have had is the famous plastic intake manifold cracked at 87K. The dealer replaced the intake, and did the 100K tune-up since I was paying the labor to remove all of the parts anyway.

We used a Dorman aftermarket intake, and so far so good. The mechanic said that the Dorman unit uses an O-ring to seal to the heads, and that is different than stock. He was not sure how it will hold up, but said that it went together nicely.

She runs great, always has. We have not had issues with the spark plugs, and the mechanic told me that a lot of it has to do with using the proper torque when installing them. Time will tell...

For service, I do that part myself using Castrol GTX 5w20 and Motorcraft filters. The oil gets changed at 3K without fail. No leaks, no smoke, and the oil still looks clean and full at the 3K mark.

My son has a 99 F250 4x4. His 5.4 spun a main bearing at 140K. He was not running the correct oil in it. He was using 20w50 and changing it infrequently. He had a remanufactured Ford engine installed and now has 70K on that one, with 210K on the truck. He learned his lesson about the 5w20 oil and changing it and the filter on a regular basis.

My sister has an 02 F150 Supercrew 2wd. They raise quarter horses and travel constantly pulling a four horse gooseneck trailer. The truck has 195K and is original. It looks like crap, but runs great. The oil probably gets changed once each 10K or so, and they get it serviced at the quick lube places, so who knows what kind of oil they put in it.

That's our 5.4 story.

1997 F150 5.4 Sold it 4 months ago with 310,000 still see it around town. Changed plugs once at 208,000 replaced alternator and startor once and changed trans fliud once. I cant say I treated this truck as well as it treated me, oil changes were done about every 7,000 to 12,000 miles

04 5.4 F150 w 174K so far....

I just put 1000 miles on it last weekend driving to Baton Rouge and back to Fort Worth. Original plugs, original belts and hoses. Truck still runs like a top. It's had 0W-20 Mobil 1 all it's life and a fresh dose every 5000.

It runs perfect now but I am worried about the plug situation. I know they need to be changed and (so I have heard) have the coils replaced. I typically do all my own service but the coils have me worried.

Great site by the way....

WOW! Have you owned the truck since new?

That's amazing!!

joe28540 02-13-2013 07:48 AM

No not since new. I want to try and keep till it hits 500k.... No special treatment either, serviced with Quaker State High Mileage every 5K since 100K...We did change out the cam phasers and timing chains & tensioners at 430K. I also put new cats on last week. But thats pretty much it aside from preventive maint...
