is the newer ford diesel's better than the old 1986's to 1996 just wondering because i have a 2011 chevy duramax diesel and thinking about buying a newer ford truck

More power with better efficiency, in a more functional overall package.

If you have a 2011 Chevy than you can already tell the difference between it and a truck made 25 years ago. Comparing the 6.7L to an IDI is like comparing a Porsche 911 with a Model T, there's just so much different with it that drawing direct comparisons is difficult.

No the new Ford Diesel is not like the 6.9 and 7.3 because they were manufactured in Indianapolis or Huntsville. Your Duramax was made in Moraine, OH. The 6.7 is made my low dollar labor in Chihuaha.

So it's made by mexicans, and is the most powerful engine to ever go into a Ford production truck.

It depends what you consider "better". A lot more power but as far as reliability goes I wouldn't consider the new ones "better".

The 6.7L has already surpassed the Blue Diamond engines in reliability. Ford did a great job building their own.

As for the reliability comment, what's the source? In the short term I think a newer diesel is a good choice. After warranty I'm not sure. When these newer SCR trucks get to be 5-10 years I think repair cost could be terrible. DPFs, DEF nozzles, DEF heaters, level sensors, all that stuff is going to be very costly. One could surmise that the SCR engines will have less EGR related issues than high EGR engines (6.4, 6.7 Cummins) but that could be offset by the aforementioned SCR related hardware.

I'm a Ford fan but if you have a 2011 Duramax I don't see a compelling reason to switch to Ford. If you had a 2010 or older and have a plow or heavy front end I'd recommend the Ford but the front suspension on the GM truck got beefed up well for 2011.

The Duramax is made by isuzu. I dont care where it's made.. its made by isuzu.

NO. Everything after the 2003 7.3 is unreliable. The early 86-96 diesels that you are talking about were very reliable but just a little underpowered. IMO the 01-03 7.3 was the very best diesel ever offered in any truck! After saying this someone always chimes in and claims cummins is best but I like being able to talk to my passengers while driving.

Ford doesn't honer their warranties on diesels anymore.

Ive had a 2003 6.0, Loved it!!! 1 injector and 1 turbo service/cleaning after 190,000km.

I had a 2003 7.3 in a crew truck, it was a machine to be reckoned with!!

My grandpa has a 97 7.3, 290,000 km, only work ever done was 1 valve and a piston after he revved it to 4200rpm trying to get unstuck with a stock trailer.

I have also had a 1994 and a 2001 5.9 Cummins, I loved them too, although the 2001 gave me more issues than my 6L did. All great engines.

Uncle has a Duramax, 2003, Never touched it after 250,000km

Long story short, It does not matter where they are made, It doesnt matter what you hear, they all are good depending what you are asking from it. And to quote user dkf sig from a few posts previous to mine (With the wrong tires and the right idiot any truck can get stuck... ) I would say, with any diesel truck, and the right idiot, any diesel can blow and be a pos!!

My 99 7.3 is nearly flawless. Have only replaced a camshaft position sensor and glow plug harness.

My 2004 6.0 has a few more issues but I love the power it has and has been fairly easy to work on. (especially with the help of the guys on the 6.0 forum!)

Bottom line, my father in law works at Ford and I get A-Plan pricing. Kinda hard to buy something else!

What is 190,000km in miles?

When I talk about reliable I am talking about 200,000 - 300,000 miles or more without problems. Pre 100,000 miles you shouldn't have to worry about anything but gas and oil with any vehicle.

ALL of our ford work trucks have over 300,000 on the clocks. A couple over 400,000 miles. On our 400K+ 6.9 and 7.3 diesels all we had to ever put in was a high pressure fuel pump in each and a lifter in the 7.3 at 375,000 miles. THAT is reliable.

It is too soon to tell if the 6.7 is a good engine, it has been out for less than 2 years.

I have 242,000 miles on a 2000 5.4 gas engine, no engine problems at all, still one original spark plug.

The only parts other than oil changes, brakes and tires that I have replaced is

Alternator
Starter (I think, can't be certain)
Fuel pump
Serpentine belt
Battery
Light bulb in dash panel
Flushed transmisson once
Changed engine coolant once or twice.

It is a 8,800 GVWR truck, the way it was loaded for everyday use it weighed 9,000 lbs, I would sometimes put another 2-3,000 lbs in the bed and would tow a 4,000 lb trailer with a load up to about 20,000 lbs.

It has a 4.10 LS rear end, 2wd, people say the 5.4 was underpowered and anemic, I never had an issue with where I felt it was underpowered.

I was surprised to find the old 7.3 had 265 hp and 500 ft lbs of torque, my 6.2 has 385 hp and 405 ft lbs of torque, it seems like Ford has made some substantial improvements to their gas engines, I just hope the 6.2 is as good as the old 5.4.
