Vacuum seals & dust boots w/ pics

Just picked up my truck from the dealer. They changed out the vacuum seals & dust boots. Wondering why one side looks different than the other. One side has rubber hanging all out & the other naked no rubber. Can anyone help me out with these pics? Thanks.

Hey Ed try this in the superduty section they are real helpful up there with this sort of thing ,sense it not 6.0 engine related.

Both of my seals are out of place on my truck.

Appreciate it wolf & 2006. Yes your right, dont know why I posted that here. So use to 6.0 section I guess. Can I get a mod to move this for me please?

They either used two different seals, or they didn't replace one of them. The metal seal (bottom pic) looks exactly like the factory and replacement version that was on my '05.

Thanks Kep. Thinking of going back to the dealer today & asking them about it.

So the passenger side (one with the rubber) been leaking fluid since I got this done at the dealer. Checked my diff & it is low on fluid. Any idea whats going on here?

Oil leaking past seal at differential. Could be bad seal or clogged axle vent line. Latter probably more common so check it first.

SuperDutyScaler 10-14-2011 09:20 PM

most likely they cut the seal sliding the axle back in, very big project to fix this i might add. when i did my 2004 F350 i had a little gear oil come out but that was it, yours is actually leaking bad, tell them why they installed different seals and to fix your axle seal now.

**** like this is the reason why I do all my own work! Dealers have young kids who dont give two pennies about your truck that you bust your ass to pay for! They would run a truck into a wall if they could get away with it and not even care

Dust seal wont leak oil on its own. If you are leaking oil its an inner axle seal. Mine is leaking too.. :(

Looks like they caused the problem if it wasn't leaking before. You have to have a lite touch when installing the axle through the seal...The diff has to come out to replace the seals which means both sides need to come back out..Bummer.

Appreciate all the responses. I usually do all my own work but originally brought it in for a fan clutch that my extended warranty was covering. They found the bad dust seals & vacuum seals which the warranty also took care of. Yes it was not leaking a drop before I brought it there. I did notice it wet when I picked up the truck & asked them about it. Tech told me fluid filled the tube when he pulled the axle & it may leak for a few days. Also my Mag-Hytec diff cover didn't help him out either with the extra fluid. He stated the Mag-Hytec cover keeps the fluid level higher than with the stock cover. I wasnt sure how correct he was on that statement but I wasnt for sure so I didnt comment. Regardless, its leaking & everytime I park it looks as the same pictured. If the seal is indeed damaged I sure hope they don't try to give me the shaft instead of a new seal. :(
