Scan Gauge II - Boost issue, EOT temp?
I finally bought a Scan Gauge II, and programmed it for EOT as well. Ran it this weekend up a grade to Big Bear.
Boost issue: It will read the boost pretty accurate to the dash gauge, but after it's been over 20 psi once, the next time it goes up there, the gauge goes to a negative number. Very odd. Any idea why? Eventually it settles back down to read correctly. Also, truck was empty, good grades but only running about 40mph due to the curves. EOT ran about 220, while ECT was 209. And this is with zero load. Does anyone know if this sounds normal? Concerned what it will be WITH a load. Other than that, gotta say I really like the Scan Gauge II, plus the fact you can program it to read all sorts of info. Nice for the $ and oh so easy to install!! Plug it in, velcro on, bam! You're off. No dash removal, wiring, etc. Thanks to those who kept bugging me to get one. |
Try this:
Enter this MAP sensor as MAP: Get reading. Then re-enter this gauge except go down the chart for which ever the MAP says, then change accordingly. (name the second one boost) Manifold Absolute Pressure (PSI) (BOOST) TXD: 07E0221440 RXF: 046285140640 RXD: 3010 MTH: 012203200000 NAM: PSI MAP is a standard gauge - but this XGauge is actually better than the standard one. It has a larger range which was needed because the standard gauge tops out around 37 psi absolute (about 22 lbs of boost), which diesels have no problem doing. This one should read well beyond 22lbs of boost. With a little tweaking you can adjust this to read boost as you said. To do this, just plug in the MAP code - get a reading from it with the key in the on position but the engine off, then based on the reading changed the last 4 digits of the MTH to whatever corresponds to your reading on this table 14.0 -- FF74 14.1 -- FF73 14.2 -- FF72 14.3 -- FF71 14.4 -- FF70 14.5 -- FF6F 14.6 -- FF6E 14.7 -- FF6D 14.8 -- FF6C 14.9 -- FF6B 15.0 -- FF6A So, for example if you got a reading of 14.5 PSI with key on engine off you'd change the MTH to 01220320FF6F and the reading should read 0.0 with key on engine off and would then show how many lbs of boost you were at when the vehicle is running. |
OK I did this. With key on, engine off, it read 14.5. I added the FF6F to the MTF code, saved it, but it still reads 14.5. Double checked, the FF6F saved, turned it off/on, started engine, still 14.5 when engine off or idling.
My truck is the 2006 PSD with the latest computer calibration from Ford. Any ideas? |
You say you 'added' it to the map code ? Maybe you meant you replaced it... but
you should be replacing the last four characters with your FF6F like 01220320FF6F |

That scangauge is a pretty handy tool. Before I got mine I thought my truck was in great shape. Since I've discovered my oil cooler needs replaced, my FICM unit was going bad, and now I've discovered my alternator is dieing.
Just load tested the alternator tonight and it'll only put out 30 amps. Sucks, but I'd rather discover this way than get stranded somewhere. Next I'll be watching the tranny temp. |

Auto parts guy had a tester. Batteries tested 1000 amps each and alternator only 30amps.

So the above code should be named Boost, and should come up as BST in the Xgauge list, not in the stock SGII gauges. Right now my MAP reads: KOEO = 14.6 Boost = 0.2 So, I just changed mine to FF6F, which isn't 14.6. 14.6 gave me a -0.1 Boost. 14.5 gave me a 0.0 boost now. Of course High or low weather pressure can have some effect. Now I just put up Barometer reading, it shows 14.5, MAP 14.6, so it's off just a little. Is any of this making sense? If you have 2 gauges named the same, one in SGII stock file, and one in the Xgauges, you might be only seeing stock reading. Might just check your BAR reading also, and try re-entering the above code as boost. My Boost gauge is exactly the same as the MAP above, except its named Boost and has the FF6F in the last four places in the Math line. Thanks for the feedback. well it's strange but after checking the programming again, saving again 3 times, then toggling thru all the other settings, the boost finally came up as 0.00 and appears to be working now. Going to run 250 miles in the morning with some grades will check it out and see if it works better than the BST that was preprogrammed into it.

Honestly guys, all of these posts seem so foreign to me. :confused: I'm waiting for my new ScangaugeII to be delivered and it's scaring me thinking about programming it, much less understanding what it is I'm seeing once I do. Isn't there a cliff notes version or "ScangaugeII for Dummies" guide or something?:-wink |
don't worry. when you get it, use the big manual to set it up. it's easy. then read the 'X-Gauge' section if you want to program additional readings into it. Get the info on this site, it's super easy.

I had first entered boost from the Xgauges page, and had the very same situation as you, negative numbers after 20 or so. Matter of fact, most did. James from Scangauge resolved our issues on this. Just hopw they update the website soon. Isn't there a cliff notes version or "ScangaugeII for Dummies" guide or something? Sean |
