main bearing cap bolts
My son and I are rebuilding our first '87 4.9L engine. We ended up over-torquing the bolts on the main bearing caps due to misreading the manual. We got off on the wrong line. Anyway, one of them broke. Does anyone know where I can get a complete set? I'd like to replace them all if possible.

Try an auto parts house or machine shop.

Everyone,
Thanks for the info. However I just went by the shop that did the head work and the guy has a 4.9L block that he doesn't need anymore so he's going to sell me the bolts out of it. |
As a precaution I would chase all the bolt holes with a tap, IMO.

Maybe it's just me, but when I have an old engine, and the main/head, rod bolts have been holding torque for 24 years, I think long and hard about fatique and stretch. There is a company called IIRC ... headbolts dot com? I believe, who have all the bolt for a 300.
Me, I'd rather spend an extra $40-$60 and know it is like the factory intended. Good luck. Nope, that site doesn't have them; only head bolt and many others. I know you have gone a different route, but ARP would be your best bet, anyone else searching for replacements. The site I mentioned above also has the hard-to-find cam thrust plates!! |
