...ug...today we have more fires, people all over this country flooding and the rest being blown away.... or burning....seems a bit of a bad year for weather ..say a prayer and have a safe day !

IB Tim 06-28-2011 03:17 AM

We seem to be in some very turbulent times in our weather…we have many members of FTE who have lost homes, businesses and their livelihood to water, many who are in extreme drought conditions and now we have fire ravaging the southwest.

Yesterday Los Alamos New Mexico (where I grew up and my family is) was evacuated .....18k people gone because of a fire that has grown 50 thousands acres in just 20 hours
…. It was just 11 years ago we lost 400 homes in Los Alamos to the Cerro Grande Fire that fire was only 48 thousand acres…it took a month to get that big….this Las Conchas Fire is extremely fast

.....Take a moment today and pray not just for fire victims but for all victims,….. During a very turbulent time in America with Mother Nature

Each day find something good in it.

Well, I've got the frame repair completed on Dad's truck, and set it back on the ground last night. Still need to address the rear brakes before it's truely ready to hit the road. It is now insured and tagged, so it's legal for the road.
Haven't driven it since doing the frame repair, but I bet it will drive much better. Between the frame flexing at the steering gear box, the loose gearbox mounting bolts, and the tie rod not being tight on the pitman arm, it was a bugger to keep going in a straight line. All those items are now corrected.
This project really has been nice, in so many ways. Not only do I enjoy working on it, but it even seems that everything I go to do happens to be the simplest thing. Nothing has been a fight to do. Nearly every bolt I've had to take off came loose without effort, and when I go to put back together, it just falls into place.
It's like the truck is doing it's part to help. Like it wants me to get the stuff done.
Case in point, there's not room between the frame rail and exhaust for the steering gear to come out without loosening the exhaust pipe from the manifold, but the box almost fell out on the way out, and went right back in, even though I never loosened the pipe. Left a nice shiny mark on the pipe, though. Also, when the gearbox went back in, the flex coupler on the end of the column actually slid right on to the splined shaft about 1/8". I actually had to take it back loose, because the wheel was ~1/2 turn off. I got it close, but still missed a couple teeth on the splined shaft The wheel was in the correct position as I put the box back in, but the pitman arm got moved during the trip back up in there.
Need a PS belt (gone) and some fluid to refill the system. Since the rest of the belts look old, I'll prolly just replace all 3. I also resealed the steering gear while it was out. That's why the belt was gone, couldn't keep the pump filled, even with the engine not running.
Of all the stuff that needed done on this truck, the frame repair was the main thing I was dreading due to the complexity of the job, and the removal/reinstallation of the gearbox. But that was so much easier than I could have dreamed. Guess the old truck still has the desire to hit the road again.
