Axle change for 4.30 gears

Hey all , I am in the process of changing gears from 3.73 to 4.30 and I came across an add on craigslist with a guy that sells new ford axles. He has one with 4.30 and LS complete with rotors my question is what do I need to look for so that the speedo and the abs works. Its a f350 axle and its going into a 2003 f250. Thanks for the help:-jammin

What year truck is it out of?

Bigpipes 35 03-07-2011 09:11 AM

I am not sure on the year He says they are brand new Hopefully they have a tag on them , will that tell us what we need ?:-X0A6

I would question them being brand new Ford axles. I'm not sure where he would get them for a decent price.

I was thinking the same thing he wants 695.00 for them but where he gets them I dont know.:-headbang

Cartmanea do you think the axle tag would tell us anything?

Bigpipes 35 03-07-2011 10:24 AM

Ok Cartmanea I talked to the guy with the axles , his company bought about 1200 early production ford axles from 1999 and 2000 He sells these axles to ford dealers around the country. He said the only thing different is I will have to flip my drivers side rear brake caliper so that its in front of the axle instead of behind. I guess on the 2000 f250 one caliper was in front of the axle and one was behind. Other than that they are complete and everything will plug right in. What do ya think?

I don't know for sure on the '99-'00 axles.

i know that 99 SD's had the one caliper swapped, in 2000 ford switched it to both in the rear of the axle. If it's a 2000 axle they should be in the rear if not i wouldnt buy it. Ford switched this for a reason you know.

Thanks Scaler I have decided to just change the gears in my curent axle less hassle i think :-wink

I would consider 4.56s as well if you're running tires larger than stock. If not larger than 33" though, 4.30s should be a good fit.

cartmanea I am running 285/70/17 nittos and am not going any bigger so hopefully the 4.30 will make a difference how do you like yours ?

cartmanea 03-09-2011 01:27 PM

I love mine, but I did plan on 37s when I installed them. With a 5.4L though, 4.30s and 285s should be a great combo. On my 6.0L the rpm's get up there on the highway, but not too bad.
