1988 ford f250 won't start

Hey i think its my fuel filter because i ran it out off gas two days ago and now it wont start so i had to tow it home. (ran what i thought was normal for 2 days). Does any one have any ideas what else it could be?

dsands88 11-12-2010 01:57 AM

I had some what of the same problems I found out it was my Tank Selector Valve. Hope that helps and good luck!

dsands88 11-12-2010 04:40 PM

ok and do i have to replace that or? and how do i see if it needs to be replaced

First put a fuel pressure tester on the fuel rail, see how much if any fuel pressure you have.

See if it falls within spec,

Engine off - 35 to 45 psi.

Engine running,

Fuel pressure reg vac line on - 30 to 45 psi.

Fuel pressure reg vac line off - 5 to 10 psi increase.

Volume test - low pressure pump - 6oz in 5 seconds.

Static pressure leakage check - remove power, verify that the fuel pressure remains within 5 psi of spec for 1 minute.

That should get you started, find an issue with any of the above let us know and can go from there.

Does the truck have spark?

Do all the tests that Danr said first. I just bypassed mine because I only have 1 tank. I took mine apart and found a rubber o ring half out of place on mine. If youre going to pull the selector valve you're better off installing a new one as these do have problems and do go bad. But start with replacing the cheaper things first like fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter if your fuel pressure is out of spec.

ok so now ive realized that my truck isnt getting spark any ideas of what i should check?

dsands88 11-12-2010 07:27 PM

Well the Ignition Coil, PIP – Profile Ignition Pickup and TFI – Thick Film Ignition module would all be suspect.

Your TFI module, it mounted on the dizzy? if so that be higher/highest on the list first best "guess".

Couple quick tests, verify power to the coil, should have battery voltage to it key in start and run positions.

Remove spout jumper and test for spark.

dsands88 11-12-2010 08:27 PM

tfi module?

danr1 11-12-2010 08:34 PM

See> Ford Ranger/Bronco II TFI Ignition Diagnostics

Yea yea yea I know, its for a ranger/bronco 2, came up in a quick search for a link with a diagram showing location and basic diagnostics procedures, its the same for yours.

I would also be leaning towards the TFI module on the dizzy. Of course it never hurts to check all the connections to the coil, dizzy, etc
