Help. What engine do I have?
 

I just traded two 4-53 DD for what I was told is a recently rebuilt 7.3L. I want to find more info on this engine but cant find anything based on the numbers on it. How can I tell what model and year the engine is? I need HP rating, Max RPM and basically all the info I can get. I plan on using it in a Marine application. How do I know if I can install a turbo?

Also whats the right way to refer to it?
7.3L IDI V8 International Diesel
7.3L IDI V8 Ford Diesel
7.3L IDI Navistar International

Numbers on the engine:
Top of the block
What I believe is the intake manifold part number: 1804357C4
RC1A
3D U2 U5 13373
96038R3

Front of the Engine

The oil fill spout is located on the IP drive gear cover.
Just to the right of the drive gear cover at the rear of the cover there is a flat place on the block between the drive gear cover and drivers side head.

Wipe the oil off and you will see the block serial number.

The first group of numbers will have either 69 or 73 in them.

69 would indicate a 6.9, 73 would be a 7.3.

Example, mine starts with 69D U2U and is an 87 6.9 block.

The blue circle around the temp sensor at 11:00 position, but before the silver valley pan is where the number is located.

6.9 NA HP 175
7.3 NA HP 185
Max RPM under load is usually around 33 or 34 hundred, same either engine.
Max RPM no load is usually around 3500, same either engine.

Turbo, sure, just keep the boost under 15 PSI on a 7.3 or 10 to 12 PSI on a 6.9.

The exact year makes no difference on the 7.3.
Mid year 85 to 87 6.9 blocks have some advantages over the earlier years.

Technically, 7.3 IDI Navistar International for the name.

I would guess that's a 7.3 since it has the solid state glow plug controller but that could have been retrofitted. You can also check by seeing what size socket fits on the head bolts. 7/16 means it's a 6.9, 1/2 means a 7.3

Adding a turbo shouldn't be an issue since many of us have been running them for years on our 6.9s and 7.3s.

Below the valve cover is 12 point bolt heads, these are your head bolts. If a 12 pt. 7/16" wrench fits it's an International 6.9IDI. If it's a 1/2" 12pt wrench it will be an International 7.3 IDI.

That looks like a nice job on the coolant outlet/thermostat housing mod.

Is that the auxiliary water pump below the fuel filter?

Fresh water boat I assume.

My boat has a 289 HO engine in it, plumbing the water and transom exhaust was fun.

even if its salt water, he could be using a water to water heat exchanger. that'd be the smart way even if its fresh water. so you can keep coolant/elc/src's in the system. better for keepin her at operating temp as well.

there is no question it is a 7.3, with that block number it means he cant see the 7. i had the same issue when tracking down my engine type a while back. Nice looking enigine though!
