Greg, what yr. ps box did you end up using?

I used the pump and gear box out a 72 F250. I had to have hoses made for it because I have a 460 instead of the original FE engine. I also had to make up a pump bracket to fit the pump to my 460. If you still have the FE engine in your truck you can use the pump bracket off the donor. Glenn Davis is currently putting together a tech article on how to do this conversion. :-tap

Interesting, so the '72 box, was that a 2wd or 4wd unit used as a donor? I have a 2wd ps. unit I could use as a donor, but don't know if that's what you used. Seems the manual unit in my 4x4 is way too small to run fluid through and use as a conversion.

I used the pump, pitman arm, and gear box from a 72' F250 2 wheel drive. I can send you intructions that Glenn Davis has made up. I also have a few pics of my installation.

phyxius 12-07-2003 02:39 AM

will this conversion work on my 76 F250 4x4 and if it will could i get it off some one thanks

heep70 12-07-2003 09:19 AM

I don't know if it will work or not. I am not familliar with a 76 frame. Try posting your question in the 73 - 79 forum. They should have an snswer for you there. I can still send you the article if you want.

460 Crew 12-07-2003 10:29 AM

Phyxis it will work for you your frame is the same. All the 67-77.5 frames are the same up front for sure. Then 77.5 to 79 are different to accomidate a PS unit originaly.

phyxius 12-17-2003 12:12 AM

perfect ,then if some one could send me the article on how to convert it i would greatly appreciate it as this power assist is driving me nuts

gdavis2265 12-17-2003 08:48 AM

guys, my tech article has been posted on this board (Thanks Ken) I have been looking at some F-100 4wd's and other years of highboys, seems it will work in those applications also. I have a buddy with a f-100 and all he needs to do is keep the 2wd pitman arm on the sector and let it rotate side to side vs. front to read. That change the drag-link (It looks like he has cross over type steering)

heep70 12-17-2003 10:45 AM

Cool, it is there.

FTE Ken 12-17-2003 04:52 PM

More articles coming soon for all years. I've got a backlog of about 100 articles, some 2+ years old. I'm finally getting some extra help here with new employees and I'm going to be able to dedicate myself about 90% to the FTE site, technology, etc., instead of the Motorhaven side handling 90% of the customer support calls. Look for a new article every 3-5 days. :) I've got a few I've done myself, like the original 67-72 disc brake article I did. Once they are polished I'll put them up (some are for the new trucks too).

gdavis2265 12-17-2003 04:54 PM

nice!

jwmoore89 01-26-2011 09:21 PM

I am wanting to do this conversion on my 71 f250 that also has a 460 I was wondering if you had any pics or could tell me how you made your power steering pump bracket.

akforceten 01-26-2011 09:56 PM

I also did a power steering conversion on my 72 F250 . But I used a mid 80's dodge steering box that way i didn't have to weld or cut on the frame. oh yea congrats on your tech article

crazed87bronco 01-27-2011 12:05 AM

Akforceten what makes the dodge power steering box work without any cutting or welding? I'll be doing the power steering swap on my 71 crew in the spring when its nice out sucks not having a garage

akforceten 01-27-2011 09:42 AM

Well I had to drill two holes in frame but other wise it works great been on the road for a few years now with no problems.here is some pics.

I did the power steering conversion on my 72 F-250 4WD a few months ago, I used the 78 F-250 4WD fully integrated system. I wrote a long post with pictures to help anyone who wants to try it. here is a link, hope this helps

crazed87bronco 01-27-2011 09:04 PM

I plan on doing mine Like yours tpdaniels I got a 79 power steering box and front axle setup after reading a lot of threads on the swap I like yours looks pretty sturdy only thing I'm not looking forward to doing is cutting the crossmember wish there was a way around it how much room is between the power steering box and radiator?

akforceten 01-27-2011 09:18 PM

that the major reason I did it the way in the pics I don't like cutting on frames .

I think you did an excellent job in adapting the Dodge sector to yours.

Got an identical sector here off of a 93 Dodge D350 that I considered doing the same thing, just never seen anyone actually complete such a swap.

Cutting on the frame isn't a big deal with me as long as it can be reinforced. The thing I'm not fond of is the pitman arm being between the leaf springs and the frame rail with some of the alternative swaps that have been done. It's probably fine and wouldn't ever be a problem but would still always be in the back of my mind.

akforceten 01-28-2011 09:48 AM

Thank you Old-Fart-Al . I had seen a kit that you could buy using the dodge box but it was $1000 . I don't have that kind of cash laying around ! so fabing time it was . getting the pieces was easy since i work in a wrecking yard if you got questions pm me

1968f250powerhouse 01-29-2011 04:04 AM

So is it easyer to use the dodge box or the late 70's box?

akforceten 01-29-2011 10:27 AM

Ether way is good .I just didn't want to cut an weld on my frame . putting the system together was fun an easy for me .one thing is I did swap out the front axle with a disc brake front axle from a 76 f-250 so the steering arm is from a 76. I have been driving for several years now with this set up an no problems yet .

1968f250powerhouse 01-29-2011 10:30 PM

Akforceten do you by chance have a step by step thing you could send me it almost looks like its the easyist way of doing it

akforceten 01-30-2011 10:28 AM

Sure I can ! give me a few days to remember how i did it. I know the parts list by heart. Also there is more pics at 1972 Ford F-250 pictures, photos, videos, and sounds | SuperMotors.net
