Stock stall speed is about 1800. I bought mine from Dacco. $80 and it works just fine.

according to their website there's not one in Kansas. Emailed Alan about it, he said not to worry its from the pressure tester, check the drain plug shouldn't be anything else so I'll check it out tomorrow and decide what to do.

Something I was thinking about after reading some other trans threads, anyone who says "no load and there's no damage" is absolutely full of crap. mine is trashed and never got off the jackstands!


Anyway, got the trans bolted up yesterday, everything looked good except the trans cooler which was absolutely filled with aluminum gunk, I used the flush stuff I bought and brake cleaner/air pressure still not clean but working on it.

How did to bolt up the transmission... Was the torque converter on the flexplate when you bolted it on, or did you put the converter in the trans first.
Honestly I think you may have not gotten all 3 input shafts engaged. You may have broke the pump.
I've had a lot of these transmissions. It's tricky to get the torque converter in all the way.

It sucks that you have had so many issues with this transmission setup.

Do you have another transmission you have put in, or is the bad transmission still in it.

Haha sorry guys I was referring to the first go around it was damaged, this time the trans, to my knowledge, is installed properly. this round I made sure 3 clunks, pushed in and rotated many time once up in the tunnel. and once bolted to the block made sure I could move the converter back and forth in the bolt holes on the flexplate, so fingers crossed!

Ok... Good to hear.

I forgot, and am too lazy to reread everything, but what are you doing with the kickdown. Are you using the lokar cable or something. The trans needs a certain amount of pressure on it at all times for it to be correctly adjusted. Remember, it's not a kickdown, it's a variable pressure valve. Even under part throttle it needs to be utilized.

I hate to get anywhere near this, but I have to ask...

Why is there dirt in his pressure tester?

I have done a LOT of transmission builds and installs over the years, I wouldn't ever use any converter that I can see obvious dirt in. Success in transmissions is ALL about getting and keeping it clean.

I'm with the other guys. Daaco makes a converter that I wouldn't hesitate to use for this application.

The TV cable will be stock setup, it's the factory 302efi system so I'll set it up according to procedure once done.
Alan said it was from the snout/hub whatever on the tester. Its my first round I figure he builds a lot more transmissions and converters than I do so his call. if it messes it up, I'll throw a fit with DirtyDog and my uncle has a stock trans he'll sell me which I will use a summit sold converter.
I'm just ready to be done with this and drive it, it's just got to last a year or so and then 351/E4OD or AOD 4R70W internals.

I was thinking of another thread with a guy putting an aod behind a 460, easy mistake.
Follow stock setup procedure for the tv cable, then give it a little more. I cut a slot in a 1/4" nut and use it as a spacer for the cable (hacksaw a slot in a 1/4" nut and it will slide over the cable, then use electrical tape to hold it on).
That will make the trans shift pretty nice for a truck. My mustangs I use 2 or 3 as spacers depending on what I'm doing with the car.
It just adds a little more line pressure. Once you get a few miles on the trans, give it a try.
Make sure that your first trip out after adjusting it to factory specs, that you baby it through the gears, then progressively get on it harder and see how it shifts. Not enough tension on the cable will give it slushy granny shifts and that's not good.

I got the transmission installed, putting fluid in tonight and maybe a test drive.


Anyone know how much the radiator holds? AOD holds 12.3 quarts does that include the cooler?

The cooler in the radiator is small. It's less than a half quart I'm guessing. Then the length of the lines.
You won't be able to put all the fluid in at once anyway. You'll be running engine while filling and once you get past 11 quarts you'll be checking the fluid level. No worries if it's a little over full. You can extract some later if needed.
