Good old 6-71.:) If it didn't have a turbo along with the supercharger it was most likely a 238hp version. Add a turbo, higher flowing injecters and steel crown pistons would make it 270hp.

The first big wrecker I drove was a Ford LN9000 with a 238 hp 6-71 and a 10 speed. It wasn't much on the hills but it was a highway screamer.

Sorry Trey my goof. All 2 stroke Detroits have superchargers ( commonly called blowers ). The blower is part of the design and not an add on.

Back in the early 80's Detroit introduced a 8.2 litre, 4 stroke V8 called the Fuel Pincher. It came in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions. Other than the non turbo 8.2's all other 4 stroke Detroits have turbochargers.

460/5 03-03-2010 09:11 PM

thats cool. why do they call em the fuel pinchers?

and my original question was which model would you recommend for a highboy? somethin that would require minimal modification to the firewall and/or fenders?

They were introduced to compete with Caterpillar's 3208 V8's which were popular in the medium truck market at that time. They generally got decent mileage but like the 3208's the competed for customers with they were breakage prone. Both engines have long since be phased out of production.

Trey no matter which one you choose you will need to do a lot of mods. I'd suggest you find a couple of Detroit powered trucks and do some measuring. I have some service manuals for Detroits and might be able to find what some of the more common versions weigh. You would have to do some serious front suspension mods to carry it though.

Well, I disassembled my new HP Dana 60 tonight, everything but pulling the ring and pinion. Rebuild, Re-gear, then bolt in place of my TTB Dana 50. I cant wait to throw that thing on the scrap heap, unless someone wants to buy it?!!

460/5 03-03-2010 09:56 PM

Here is one with a 92-96 F150. Apparently she was trying to get the battery charged so she could go dumpster diving. What the hell?
