Date code is under the oil filter adapter... look here for a pic of the location

    Casting dates on blocks are:

First character (a digit) representing the year, the second character (a letter) representing the month, and the last one or two characters (one or two digits) representing the calendar date in the casting month

Blocks cast after 1969 will have two "dots" below the year digit to designate a block cast form 1970 onwards and not to be confused with those cast in say 1960.

Could be a partial VIN number that was very very rarely stamped on some engines.

Other than that is doesn't mean anything in the FE world. For a 390 block, is to look at the front of the block for wither the 352 or a reverse 105 casting. Reverse 105 are more desireable for higher horsepower applications, and about 1 in 20 can be bore .080 over to make a 428 with the proper crank.

Regular "352" cast blocks are nearly 1 in 45 with that ability.
