I think the seal is just to keep the gear oil in axle, the bearing allows the axle to ride, roll with low friction adided by the oil for lubrication and cooling
I would try to ask a mechanic, I am not that exp with repairing thaxles

hello mr bobby i have a question for you. I have a 1979 ford half ton and i lost the rear axle on the right side. all of my gears r still good. does the seal or the bearing hold the axle in because before i took the truck out i noticed that it was leaking on that axle. so i was wondering if that was the cause of the axle coming out. thanx man i appriciate it
