First tow with the F250 6.2

Im also trading in an 08 6.4 diesel for the 6.2. I use the truck to carry a slide in truck camper which weighs 4000#s plus. The 6.4 has more than enough power to do the job but the milage isnt what I hoped for. I get about 12.5 to 13 with the camper on. The 6.2 is coming late Nov /early Dec. Im not expecting the same MPG as the diesel. Reading posts in other forums from guys with the 6.2 and campers Im thinking I'll get about 10mpg. If I get that I'll be happy, if I get a litle more I'll be VERY happy. As far as power off the line, maybe a little less with the gasser but the new truck will have a 4.3 rear, the old has 3.73 which might even things up a bit.
The diesel has treated me well, no problems at all. But I wont be sorry to loose the 3 minute wait before shutting down to cool the turbos, the 80 in parts for oil changes, 200 fuel filter changes(Ford), and 8 bucks per 125 gals of fuel in additive. I am looking forward to the turn key of the gasser, easier time finding fuel when traveling, plus moving from the supercab to a crew cab. And the new cabin interior setups are really nice. It would be great if I get to post in late December that Im also getting the same MPG as the 6.4 Im replacing. You never know.........

My mileage is better with my 6.2 than it ever was with my 6.4.
Towing 7k non-aerodynamic enclosed trailer
6.4 = 7-8 mpg
6.2 = 9-10 mph
City/Hwy mix driving
6.4 = 12 mpg
6.2 = 13-14 mpg
Hwy driving
6.4 = 14-15 mpg
6.2 = 15-16 mpg
My 6.4 was stock, and so is my 6.2.
I have no worries at all with my 6.2 like I had with my 6.4. I'm not worried about what happens after the warranty. There is no new groundbreaking technology (DPF, DEF, etc.) with the 6.2 like the newer diesels, so we are not in unchartered waters. Yes the 6.2 is a new engine design but it utilizes common gas engine technology.
I'm just getting ready for the next trip.

wow, better mileage with the 6.2 Gasser than the 6.4. Wonder what the I am thinking of buying one with the 4.30 gears. Wonder what that would do to the mileage. If you feel the 6.2 has more than enough power to pull a 10k trailer than I guess I really don't see much advantage to the diesel. I drive a 6.0 diesel at work and love it. But I also don't have to pay to maintain it. That is what is scary about owning one myself.

Reasons to go 4.30...
Towing heavy and often
Going to install larger 35" + size tires
Live at a high altitude 5000 +
When I order my F350 CC 4x4 Lariat...I am going 4.30. I figured that going with a 35" size tire...will effectively get me a 4.10 gear ratio. IMO...Just about as perfect as possible for the 6.2L.
Good luck...

Coming off a diesel [Dodge] I find the towing power OK but the current mileage is killing me, [9.something] on the rolling hills of I 87 in eastern NY where my 06 smoker [chipless] was getting 14-15. I ran in 'tow' mode to avoid all the shifting up/down/up.
14-15 MPG is the best I get, either around rural country roads in VT or on the highway. Hopefully it'll come up bit with a couple more K on it.
But man, I look great in it!
F250 XLT 6.2L 4x4 crew 3.73 short bed black.
BTW: This is what I'm hauling...
Not sure of the weight but I'll get it soon.

I am in the market for a new pickup. I have a 2007 Dually which I used to use to haul around my 4000# plus camper. Now I own a 22 foot Desert Fox toy hauler. On a recent trip to Phoenix running about 70 mph, I got a whopping 8 mpg before the turbo stopped working and 9.0 after I got a new one. Terrible for a diesel IMO, so I am seriously thinking of saving the 8K on a new diesel and going gas. Since my trailer is about 11 feet tall like a giant sail on the front, I am guessing 9 with the gasser would be a dream? With the current .50 premium for diesel here in Idaho, $8k difference, and cheaper maintenance, I can't go wrong, can I? I wish a person could test drive one of these 2011's WITH the trailer.

8-10 mpg will be the norm for towing a high profile loaded trailer like you describe, no matter the powerplant.

JL,
You are absolutely correct. Some diesel guys do lie about towing mpgs.
For those who would like to see what towing mpgs some 6.7 owners are getting, here is a link for you to see for yourselves.

*UPDATE ON MILEAGE*
My worst mileage (towing the same setup in my avatar and orginal post) has been 7.5 mpgs. I was fighting a headwind the entire time. My best mileage towing the same trailer is 9.9. My overall best towing mileage has been 12mpg. I was towing a 2k open utility trailer in the mountains of Virginia, West Virginia, and Western Kentucky. So far I've logged over 2500 towing miles on my truck and have a total of 5100 miles. My old 6.4 (stock) mpgs would range 7.1 at the lowest and 9.1 at the highest mpgs.

On a related note, I picked the 3.73 because I new I would be driving this truck a lot day-to-day too. 3.73 is a better set up for mileage, and given the new 6 speed, I figured I'd have enough gears to bring my rpms up if need be. A good comparison was posted in another thread where two equal trucks except for their diffs compared rpms. Turned out 4.3 in 6th gear equaled the rpms using a 3.73 in 5th.
So, for me, I drive a lot less without a tow than with a tow. 3.73 was the right choice for me.

How does your rig tow up the hills? Does it keep up to speed pretty well? My previous gassers always sounded like they could blow up at any time the rpm's were so high, and I was blazing along at 35 or 40 mph. And going down the hills, how does the tranny handle it?
