Angry '77 400 Specs

It's not pretty but here goes............according to Motor Truck Repair Manual...........under 6000 lbs GVW emissions standard, horsepower 175@3600. Torque 326@2000. Retarded crank sprocket and dished pistons killed it.

That's pretty painful.

I've got an inline that runs more horse than that.

hmm... Guess I'll have to see what I can do to it.

Smile '77 400 Specs

Hey fordtruckenthusiast,

I got one too. Mine is in a '77 F-250 Ranger XLT 4WD
lowboy. I almost decided to drop in a 460, but changed
my mind. Get in touch with the moderator of this forum
Bill Beyer and ask him what to do about your engine.
I'm glad I did. Now I've got something that packs 8
cylinders of pure unadultered whupa33! Good luck and
write anytime- happy to share notes and ideas!

Thumbs up '77 400 Specs

Same here White Knight. I had thought of a 460 swap but decided to go with a rebuilt 400 because of the comparable hp&tq I can get out of the 400 (300+hp and 400+tq) with 200lbs less weight than a 460. Not to mention the hassle of a swap and exspensive headers. Thanx

Talking '77 400 Specs

Hey Kopfenjager,

Stay in touch, and soon as you can,
post some pix of the Green Beast.
BTW how did you come by your wheels
with that offset?

Will be posting some pix of Whining
Wilma (named for her power steering
pump) as soon as I do some more body
work and paint. Good luck with the Beast!

'77 400 Specs

White Knight I drove up to Portland to 4Wheel Parts, thinking they would have wheels and tires (on hand) to buy. When i got there all they had was Pro-Comp and some odds and ends. Drove 4 hours and I could of seen more at the local les swab, just ALOT more expensive. I ended up ordering my tires that day, 15.5-35-15. Since they are so wide I didn't feel safe putting them on my 8" wide outlaws so I ordered some 15x10" wheels. He ask what backspacing I wanted , so I asked what did he have. Standard I guesse is 3 & 3/4 and I went with 2" to avoid lug contact with my radious arms. She looks wide! Exspecialy being around 98" long from front wheels to rear. My dad and I put her on jack stands and pulled out the torch. Cut about 18" out of the frome, overlapped her abot 2' and shimmed, measured and welded her back together. I then drilled some 1" bolt holes and put bolts thru her. 2 on each side , just to be sure. Man fame rails are a b#$% to drill thru! As soon as I get some pictures I will throw some up of her. She is my beater, and I love to run the p!@#$ out of her.Thanx

Feel free to start a new thread for your questions.

Define "good power".

Define "for cheaper".

The cheapest thing you can do is a "straight up" timing set, if your engine has a retarded cam timing set. Power gain is minimal.

Headers and a 4bbl intake with a small 4bbl would be next.

Cam. A newer "RV" type cam and valve springs will wake it up.

Compression. Now we are into "for cheaper"...than a 460 swap.

Heads. Ditto.

This forum is full of build threads and upgrade questions/answers.

basic upgrades!

like mention before. compression up, tim meyer pistons. upgrade cam to some mild RV. Good timing chain straight up. these 3 basic upgrades will probably almost double your hrspwr. If you do some mild porting and upgrade intake/carb 300hrspwr is not a problem. How much do you want to spend? Just recently build a 400 ford with cobrajet heads. kinda expensive for a 400 build and not for everybody. if needing any assistance check out my albums of my 400 and drop a message if any questions. I'm a big block guy but like the 400's in the right application.

In 1971, before SAE "net" power measurements, the 400 was rated at 260 hp @ 4400 rpm. By comparison, in 1971 the 460 was rated at 365 hp @ 4600 rpm. Bear in mind that these numbers compare a 400 with a 2V carburetor and 9.0:1 compression ratio to a 460 with a 4V carburetor and 10.5:1 compression ratio.via internet
