Passing emissions?

Hi,

I'm in one of the wonderful emissions counties here in NC, and now it appears that I have to get my smog pump system put back on the truck. Problem is the last owner tore everything about it off so I don't have brackets or anything. The truck, however, has been running fine and all the exhaust leaks have been sealed (from the crossover pipe on the head, pipe that runs to Y-pipe from air pump, etc.). The truck runs fine.

I will be fixing it up(time and money limiting how far and how fast), but right now it needs to get a valid inspection, so if anyone has any recommendations on a "lenient" inspection station in say, the Triad area...send me a PM.

This truck is in much better shape than alot of other of the same vintage I see on the road, so it frustrates me to be going through all of this...

Thanks,

Bryan J.

Passing emissions?

Sorry Bryan, I can feel yo pain tho, we went through this 10 years or so back in the Triangle. I sold my 79 E250 rather than face the music, it did have 206,000 miles on it. Now all of my trucks are 66s. I hope you find some help.

Passing emissions?

Thanks for the reply. I seem to get one of two responses. 1) easier to sell the truck or 2) replace the engine with an newer EFI motor. Problem is that with my budget, both options are more expensive than fixing the problem. I don't use the truck every day, but it's been a good truck and I plan on keeping it for a long time. It only needs to pass emissions for another 6 years are which it will be 25 years old and exempt from the emissions testing. It only has 160k on it so it's relatively low mileage as well.

I have been looking for an 80-86 truck just to look under the hood and take some photos and get part numbers, so if anyone spots an 80-86 truck at a used car lot let me know so I can go check it out. I would contact one for sale in the paper but would feel bad as I'm not really calling about buying it....

HI Bryan, You didn't say what engine you have in your truck. I know where there is an 88 with a 5.0 EFI that you might be able to get the parts off of if you need 302 parts. Let me know, my email address is in my sig file.

I have a 351W, unfortunately I've also found out that it has a 302 carb. on it, wrong air cleaner, etc. I'll soon be recieving a shop manual for the emission system so hopefully it will have a more detailed description of what this motor is *supposed* to look like.

Hey Bryan-

Did you fail a test or were you just informed that you need the smog pump? The reason I ask is that I have an '84 Bronco without a smog pump (I removed it long ago when I lived in FL) and I have passed the emisions test for the last 4 years.

My trick - I go to a very busy Jiffy Lube or any place that has a bunch of kids (instead of real mechanics) who don't know what to look for or don't care enough to look.

I think some heavy duty trucks in '84 may not have had the pumps, but I could be wrong.

BTW, I'm in Raleigh.

Good luck.

I think all the trucks have smog pumps exc. the diesels as far as I could tell in the junkyard. Out of curiosity, which Jiffy lube is your favorite? We were hassled by the one on Capital Blvd. near New Hope Ch. Rd. about the smog pump already.

I've located the majority of the parts in a junkyard near here, although I may give it a go before I break down and buy all the stuff. Seems that there are 400 different configurations depending on the year and engine size....I found at least 3 different setups just on the 351W engine alone. I don't even know what to look for....maybe I'll just give it a go first...what a pain....

Passing emissions?

Hmmmm...

That was the one I went to last year. I guess I'll have to search for a new "lenient" inspection station.

I have a carb on my truck (as well as a healthy cam and headers) and I usually have to do some tuning to get it to pass the actual sniffer test, so I start by explaining to the inspector that I may need a tune-up to actually pass the emissions part. I request that they check everything out first (including the emissions) to verify that it will pass. They may charge a few bucks, but I know at that point if I will pass. If it only failed because of the emissions, I will lean out the carb and return. If they have an issue with the hardware (or lack of), I will find another inspection station.

So far this has worked but it is a pain in the ****. I built the engine in a state that has emission testing (FL), but they don't actually get under the hood looking for components. Live and learn I guess.

Let us know how you do.

John & Bryan, I plan on getting together with some of the NCFTO guys for breakfast and then attending the Carolina Collector Auto Fest at the Fair grounds on sat. March 08. Why don't you watch this forum and plan on joining me that day. I'd love to meet you and talk trucks.

John

What's the thing for March 8th? I'm interested in seeing about coming, don't know if I can though. Can you give me some more details? By the way I'm up in Butner.

Also, John, I believe I might have seen your truck a couple of times while in Durham.

I don't know about places in the triad, but I think I could get some shop names in Durham who might be lax on the visual inspection. I gutted one of my cats cause it was plugged, and a friend of mine said not to worry about emissions he could get it done somewhere, so the sniffer might not be a problem either. Another friend had a VW GTI and the shop couldn't even get a reading on the exhaust, so they pulled an Escort they had sitting in the lot in and used the exhaust numbers from that.

Hi Max, The Carolina Collector Auto Fest is held twice a year at the Jim Graham building and fenced area around the bld. There are venders inside as well as show cars. I go every show and enjoy it very much.

You might have seen my truck in the north side of town, I live between Guess Rd & Duke St off Horton Rd.

Can you go outside of your counties to get inspected now?

Thanks for the info.

Yes that's about where I've seen it. I go through there about once every 2 weeks or so.

Is membership limited to certain years of trucks?
I looked at your website and I liked what I saw and am interested in being a member.

By the way, I do believe, although I'm not absolutely sure, that you do have to get it done in your county, because on the inspection sheet they use has a space for county, and it would only make sense that you could only have it done in your county. I also think that before the emissions inspections, you could have it done outside of your county. I think that's just another gimmick for the state and county to get more money.

If you saw brother John's truck you saw a blue and white blur. The man thinks he's Dale Jarrett.
