IMO, rope works fine. There are modern rope materials (teflon-impregnated) that are better than original. It's all in the installation tho...
Not familiar with the 6-cyl engines, but many of the one-piece neoprene lip seal kits sold for the V8 don't work that well, because they don't fill the entire groove in the oil pan and timing cover, so they can twist. Others apparently come with pieces to eliminate that, and work great.
