What transmission is in my 2003 F350?

I was at the auto parts store earlier, and was trying to find the right fluid and filter for my transmission. I thought the tranny was a 5R110W Torqueshift on the 6.0L PSD, but the guy behind the counter said that since mine was a 4X4 it would actually be a 4R100W. Is this true, and what fluid do you all recommend if it is a 4R100W (I know the TS takes Mercon SP only)? Thanks in advance!

all 6.0 diesels have the torqshift. mercon sp is really hard to find out side of the dealer. i only found it online. thru searching i found out that ford now reccomends mercon lv. i recently used valvoline multi fluid that says it is compatible with mercon sp as well as lv. it was the only one that specifically said it was compatible with sp where as most dont reccomend using it at all.

That is what I was thinking. So even early models including 4X4 have the Torqueshift 5R110W, correct?

yes. there are updated parts as well. if you do do a rebuild you will want to upgrade the oneway clutch, get a transgo shift kit which is somewhat missleading in name. it ia a snapring that prevents the tranny from dropping out of gear. also a upgraded direct solenoid will help prolong the direct clutches. also i think the reverse planetary is a issue as well. from what i have been looking at it is kinda expensive to update to the 05+ components as well as rebuild the tranny. not doing it though would be expensive if you had problems.

Thanks Lubbock! That helps out a lot! Now it is off to the auto parts store (again) I go for the filter. Sucks to have to go to the dealership for the fluid now though. Oh well.
