About done with the Pirellis!!!

I have had it with the stock 275/55R20 Pirellis Scorpion ATRs that came with my FX4! First, I'm not happy about the passenger rated tire on my truck and the traction in snow this past winter was BAD. I'm looking at 285/55/R20 tires from either Michelin LTX AT II or BFG AT K/O. Both are LT rated and should provide better winter traction. I'm leaning towards the Michelins because I have had success with them on other trucks. I run BFGs on my Jeep (KM2s) but that is not a good comparison. I am pretty confident the size is fine for a stock 2009 150 given the change is very slight. Anyone have experience with the Michelins?

Hmm. Its always interesting to see different peoples opinions on tires. I have the Pirelli's on my Expy, though slightly larger than the ones you have, and my traction in snow is phenomenal. I wonder why your traction is so bad. Less weight perhaps?

That may be part of it; the snow was very deep, but I was disappointed with the performance all the same. I have never experienced the flat spotting people comment on. I have towed and hauled with the tires and I would feel more comfortable with an LT rated tire with a stiffer sidewall.

I know a few guys with the Michelins and they like them. Only negative is that there are others that look better. For whatever thats worth.

Another tire to consider in that 285/55R20 size is the Toyo Open Country A/T.

I have the Perelli's on my '08 F150 and in the 7500 miles to date I have had not a problem here in the Chicago land area. My brother-in-law had the same problem of limited traction in the snow on his 4X4 King Ranch Super Crew. He went with the Goodyear Wranglers. I had the Michelins on my 1992 F150 and the only problem I had is dry rotting in the tread at 50% tread. I also had them on my 1983 F150 with the same sry rotting. In both cases I ended up replacing them with Goodyears and had real good luck. The BFG that are currently on my 2004 Excursion are OK but at 50% or so tread again are starting to weather crack in the treads. In all the prementioned Goodyears I did not have this problem. Hope this helps. Oh one more thing Goodyears are still American Made! Big plus for me!!

I agree about the 'look' of the BFGs, but I really want to focus on function. I don't know anything about the Toyo tires.

I hear you they do look awesome, and when I had them on my first Jeep they were great. I just don't know about my truck. I found they are, cost wise, not much different from the Michelins I am looking at.

decisions, decisions...

Thanks for all the input, everyone.

What do you think about the GY Wrangler Duratracs? They may not have your exact size, though.

My dad will only buy Michelins and if I could afford them I would too. We've had several sets of LTX's on different vehicles and each set got at least the mileage they were rated for and then some without any trouble. They wear extremely well, are very quiet, and provide great traction in all conditions (especially snow). Although I read BFG's do well too. I will agree they lack in "the look" department, but personally i'd rather have functionality over aesthetics. My vote is strongly for the Michelins

The BF Goodrich ATs are awesome tires. Good traction, yet still good for on-road driving too. I hate the Perellis. I wanted the 20inch rims on my FX4 but I didnt want to be stuck with those tires, and good tires for a 20inch rim cost more money then I wanted to spend after paying for a brand new truck.

Ive got the 18inch rims, and while Im not crazy about this model of the Wranglers Ford put on mine, I prefer them over the Perellis. When its time to replace them, Im going to go with the BF Goodrichs.

I considered looking for a trade to the 18" wheels from someone with an 2009 FX4 w/18s too, but never got any interest. I may be getting a bonus at work, so we'll see what that looks like. I'm still leaning Michelins, but the BFG ATs are a close second and edge closer depending on the time of day.... ;-)

pirrelis are terrible. This past winter my 09 FX4 sat immobile for weeks at a time because it was dangerous to drive - if it would move at all. I have a set of LTX on my old Bronco and it will go anywhere anytime in any conditions. Tires are the big thing, but next time around I will be looking at the Bridgestone Dueler Revos as I have had several sets and they are great in any conditions. The BFG are really good as well, but the Revos have better road manners in my opinion.
