My 5.4L has a defective piston

Just had my Expedition tuned up 3 weeks ago. The wife noticed a strange sound -ticking. Pulling out of the garage that did the work. As soon as she pulled back in it stopped. Last week it started ticking again and by the time she could make it back to the gargage the damage had been done. Looks like there is piston damage, spark plug was basically ripped out from the threading - can't re-thread -it's that bad - broke the cable attached to the plug. 110,000 miles

Did the mechanic screw something up when doing the tune up or is it possible that the piston just was defective?

Any suggestions on what to do from here? I've been told by some mechanics not mess with repair - used, refurb engine - anyone have any good engines laying around for a good price near Atlanta?

Did you have the plugs changed at the dealer? Spark plug blowouts are becoming more common. Check out the v-10 forum.

Yes, Plugs were changed at that time. I thought that perhaps the wrong plugs might have been put in - but that would not explain why the engine ran fine for 2-3 weeks.

I dunno. One person had their plugs changed and went 5,000 miles before they heard a thump. I just hope mine makes it to 100,000. With 48,000 right now, things aren't sounding too healthy. Good luck.
