300 ci, 300,000 miles!

I've heard all those old Jimmy/Detroit jokes, but I loved the things! They were not for the feint of heart though. Running the rack was something that could not be written in a service manual. You had arrived as a diesel mechanic when you could do a good job of running the rack.
For their day they were a great piece of technology. Being a two cycle, they made very good power for their weight. Times change. Now we have electronic fuel injection on diesels too. Such decadence!

I think I got the bum end of the deal with my 300.
Only 125,000 and I already have serious blow by and
really low compression. I've considered that it may
actually have 225,000, or 325,000, but I have a lot of
records that don't suggest that's the case.By the way,
it still has some pep and runs like a sewing machine.
Anyway, I'm affraid I'm scorching the cylinder walls with
the bad rings, so a stock rebuild is in it's near future.
I wish I knew how it wore out with so few miles. I guess
since I have only owned the truck for 1 1/2 years and 7,000
miles, I might never know. Same goes for the mileage question.
Murph.

How often do you change your oil?

15 years ago my 250 had 150000 on it shortly after that the speedo went out.
i am not sure where its at. ten years ago i did a compression test and it had about 90 in some and 70 in others.
i have worked it hard pulling cars hauling sand ect.
during the winter i put a ton 1/2 in it for traction when it snows and leave it there till its gone.
the old girl is still pumping (smoking) and uses 4 qts of oil a week.
i have another motor from a 95 fuel infected that i will put in someday.
