will a 4x4 tranny fit a 2x4?
i have a transmission out of an 89 f350 that was 4x4 and i'm curious if i can take the transfer case off and make it fit into my 2x4 f100?

Probably not without changing the tail housing and mainshaft.

I've been looking for a ZF 5 speed off and on, with big block bell pattern. I guess depending on what engine you have, and truck, etc... we could narrow it down for ya.

the tranny is out of an 89 f350 that had a 460

Yes, you can. However, you will need a parking brake from a pre-99 F-Super Duty chassis-cab. Or 99+ F-450, 550. This will take the place of the transfer case.
