Building a Bumper
Hey guys I am currently in the process of building some bumpers for my 94 F250...I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in seeing some pictures of the build..plus I would be willing to give any advice and tips to anyone else who is interested in building one
Just figured I would see if anyone wanted to see pics or not? I know there isn't to many companies who make bumpers for our trucks so I figured someone might be interested...

Alright I took some pictures today but we have horrible lighting in our shop so they didn't come out very good...I will try to load them on here tonight or tomorrow.
So far so good. I bought a 4x8 sheet of 3/16 A36 steel to make them. I think I will have enough material to make a front and a back.

I built bumpers and rock slides for my Durango a few years ago. I plan on doing the same for the F-250.
Best first step is to mock them up out of cardboard, then save the pieces after you find out how you want it to look. You can use those pieces as a template to lay on the plate steel and mark yout cuts with.
What thickness steel are you using? Are you providing mounts for D rings? Are you providing a mounting area for a winch too?

I am going to be using 3/16 steel. I didn't plan on a winch just cause I don't think I will ever really even use it to be honest with you. I am not sure on the D-rings yet. I am going to be incorporating a hitch receiver and recessed fog lights. So I just figure if I had to get pulled out, or pull someone out I would just hook the strap up to the trailer hitch.
I am a college student going to school for welding and I have to make a senior project, so I figured I would make bumpers, worse comes to worse I could probably sell them for a profit.
I am going for a big "bambi basher" look over a sleek design. But so far it is turning out pretty good. I hope to have it all tacked up and everything in place by the end of the week.

I hope you've estimated your bumper weight and made sure that it wouldn't bring the nose down too far on the truck...
As for selling for a profit...make sure they aren't too much like Road Armor. RA would have no problem taking an amateur to court for infringing on their designs.
Can't wait to see your finished project...

Okay lets see if this works lol
Like I said I started with a 4x8 sheet of 3/16 steel...weighed about 260 pounds
I made a template of what I wanted the bumper to look like, and then I traced that out onto the steel and cut it out with a torch. Then I started measuring out the peaces that would make up the front of the bumper. You can see here I have the first peace in place and ready to be tacked.
Here I have laid out a few more front peaces. I cut them out using a circular saw...which makes quick work of this 3/16 plate.
Here you can see that I have all the front peaces tacked up at a 90 degree angle. The peaces vary in width, but extend down 9 inches.

Here I have all the front peaces tacked into place, and I also tacked in some scrap for gussets just so nothing moves while it is being tacked into place. I also added the first peace of the bottom. It is at a 45 degree angle, and is 3 inches in length
Here I have started adding the rest of the peaces which will make up the bottom of the bumper
This is what it looks like from the back side...everything isn't in place yet
Here I have it clamped onto the side of the table, and is what it will look like from the front
and another
So far everything is working out well...please ask any questions guys...and feel free to give me some input!
