I have a 2004 F250 4X4 the front axle seal is leaking where the driveshaft goes into the axle. How would I go about changing the seal? Is this an easy job or should I take it to a professional mechanic?
Any advice would be appericiated.

 

Can you give more info? Do you mean where pinion meets the carrier bearing unit? or is the oil leaking onto the tires from the axel shaft/Axel tube.

I believe that you are referring to what is a dust seal. Should be no oil on inner side of seal normally. If there is oil leaking then seal at differential end of axle is the culprit. Sometimes if axle vent line becomes clogged the pressure builds up and forces oil through the inner seal and then it goes down the axle tube and then through the dust seal - I would check the vent line first.

 

if you rleak is an axel shaft seal its an ok job just kinda a pain to get the axel out u need to taka alot of things apart to get it out. if its the drive shaft it should be even easier u just will need socket big enought to get your driveshaft mounting flage off to get to the seal. if you are new to this prob i would just take it to a shop. if u dont get the seal in there right u will have the problem again. but if u can show us a pic of the problem area we could steer you in the right direction faster

Ok, I think you are referring to pinion seal. I have not worked on that before and people who worked on it give conflicting reports. Some say it is easy given right tools and other say, take it to shop. But if I were you, I would try first and then take it to shop if necessary. Yours should be a DANA 60 front, so help and manuals are plenty.

ok by the look at the pic its the front pinion seal, easy easy fix, all is to remove the drive shaft, and then there is a large nut inside of the yoke, u will need a air gun to remove this nut. then pull the yoke and pull the seal, make sure u replace it with a new one make sure then u put in the new seal it gets installed flush. replace the yoke and make sure the nut is set back to proper torqe spec. and then hook the drive shaft back up and check the fluid level. just remember that this type of leak a little fluid makes a big mess from the moving parts. but it should be a simple fix. good luck

 

I just looked at your 3 pictures, and I don't see anything leaking. I would leave it alone.

Sorry Ron, I wiped the leak up around the shaft seal before I took the pictures. My mistake. The way I spoted the leak was I was driving the truck in 4X4 low for a while to warm up the oil becaus the other day I had plans on changing the oil in the front axle. This is when I spotted the leak. It only leaks when in 4X4.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I'll get a seal Monday change the seal and go ahead and change the dope in the axel.

 

easy fix lock your hubs in before you do it to help hold that axle from turning. when you tap the new seal in place take your time to tap in evenly.
