Hey Cris55 bro you got a great project going there eh. I was eye ballin an uber cummins I-6 hot rod but, I step to a wild side here on the west coast of Canada and found some crazed Detroit D maniacs now I am on the same path as you. Looked at a 4-53 but the 6V53T just sounded insane. Giver bro good luck Eh!

Question questions

chis55, I have a question for you that I seriously do not know the answer to, so bear with me. I remember Detroit diesel engines as being a two cycle.
Is yours?? If so, why in the cat hair would you want a TWO CYCLE diesel in your truck? If yours is a four cycle, then, please disregard my questions and no offense was meant.

Just to hear the noise it makes when it runs. That should be the sole purpose to put one in.

thats about the only plus to one, they do have thier own sound.

however, the way my dad describes it is that in order to drive one, when you walk up to it you put your hand in the door jam, and slam the door on it so you are mad enough to drive it.

i haven't drove any of the two strokes myself, but i have drove some 60 series that were so gutless I wanted to slam my hand in the door.

The 60 series are known for the fuel economy, not raw power. These days, you can get the ECM reprogrammed, and injectors hogged out & all kinds of good stuff.
I would do a 6V53T swap in a heartbeat. To me, they sound the best. Next up would be an 8V or 12V53 (based on good sound not performance).

very true, about the economy, of all the trucks I have drove, my favorite was an FLD shaker because of the 475 horses of C15 kitty power. not much problem pulling 109,720 of beets (I had overweight permits, but was still over, and yeah, I remember that number like my SSN) but it drank the go-go juice alot faster... I still say that a cummins is the best blend of power and economy, whether it be a new isx or an old 350.

anyways... back to the subject on hand, me and my dad have talked about how cool it would be to drop a 6v53 into my grandpas 58 f350. my grandpa started driving truck in the late 50's and love the sound from the screaming jimmy's. would be great with the 5 speed clark and two speed brownie we have, considering its for one of the brave souls that drove a twin stick through the rockies w/o a jake!

Yup, that is the way to run a 2-stroke detroit. They are fun to operate for a little while for the novelty but the noise gets old after a while.

Omg! you know that is the same motor the army uses in M113a3 Armored Personel Carriers right. I love those things. With dumb *** army privates driving and maintaining them, they would run all day "Ball Out" and never complane.
You want scary try doing 40 mph through the woods over any ruts in a short 12 to 14 ton aluminum can that would turn/stop on a dime. Ahhhhhh the good ole days!
