1995 ford f350 7.3 SHIFTING PROBLEMS

I got a 95 ford f350 with a 7.3 and its automatic. About 2 weeks ago it started shifting wierd with the speedometer acting wierd. I did a code scan and it came up with PO500 a vehicle speed sensor malfunction. So i replaced it and cleared the code and it ran fine for two weeks then last night i took the truck out and the speedometer wasnt working and it started shifting crazily and hard. so i did another code scan and it came up the PO500 again. So i replaced it again and its still acting wierd.

Any thoughts on what keeps causing the problem guys?

THANKS

Check your wiring, start from the sensor, thats all I can say.

its a 25$ part from ford, its on the very top of your rear axel housing, you cant miss it, your speedo will be off and your tranny cant tell how fast its going so it was shift way to early or way late. replace it and forget about it. its 1 8mm bolt and it pops out.

fordfinatic, i know this is kinda old, but did you fix your problem? my 95 has the same problems and besides checking wires and changing the speed sensor(along with other waste of times...) i am now bout to change the speedo cluster out. mine comes and goes, but i think ive narrowed it down to the speedo. just thought i would look for some more thoughts on it.

Well its not a diesel but a friend of mine has a 95 F150 with a gas engine and it would shut off at stop signs and randomly idle weird. After changing a bunch of sensors and stuff it turned out to be the speedometer guage. Changed the guage and it was fine. So I guess it could be tied in on a diesel to?

I wiring tests fine from the pcm to the sensor
And nothing is bad on the tone ring move to the PSOM.
You cannot repair the PSOM

yah, alot of brake cleaner, some time with a trouble light and and a compressor, my wiring looks and checks good, pulled the cover on the rearend, ring looks good, replaced sensor and plug(Ford parts), even changed the shift sensor on trannie, it was cracked and broke anyways...

I am pretty sure its the PSOM cause after i pulled it out blowed it out, put it all back together, the shift probs never came back for quite a while. also the last time it happened, after ever so tapping, uhh err, hammering on the face of the speedo, it came out of it. ive found a couple used clusters online and figuring on going that route next. then its onto the exhaust heat prob, but thats another thread....

I had a similar thing happen to me. I went through 4 or 5 Borg Warner speed sensors, and eventually went with a Motorcraft from RockAuto, and the Motorcraft has yet to fail me. However, I changed the fluid in the axle at the same time I put the Motorcraft in, so it could have been the new fluid that helped, too. If I had to guess, though, I'd say it was the crappy Borg Warner sensors.

Use only Motorcraft and good luck.

Edit: I actually read the entire thread and see that you've already got a Motorcraft in it. From here, I would go ahead and change the gear oil in your rear axle. While you have the differential cover off, go ahead and inspect everything in there and make sure it's in working order, especially the tone ring.

BEAST428 is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
I recently had my E4OD rebuilt and the first time I took it out the trans shifted hard and erratic. Then I noticed the speedometer and odometer weren't working. I also saw the interior lights weren't on either. Tracked it down to #8 15 fuse. Works now!! Who would have thunk it?
