rear main seal

Somebody told you wrong. Maybe there is something that you are overlooking. The rubber seal is meant as a replacement for the old rubber type. Did you offset the seal? Meaning, you should have one end of the seal sticking up out of the block and one end of the seal sticking up out of the main cap (to avoid the two ends of the seals lining up with the mating surfaces of the main cap and block). Also, after making sure that the surfaces are clean and oil free, you need to use some sort of sealant on the mating surface where the cap meets the block, without coming in contact with the rubber seal (such as a thin layer of ultra black silicone or anaerobic sealant).
