Question exhaust brakes

wasnt sure where to put this... but being the aftermarket products section i figured i couldnt go wrong here...

I tried to find the thread i remember reading awhile back but couldnt and i wanted to ask a question about them... I know they run them on the big semi's and all that being that theyre built to handle it... and i know some people on here have installed them on their rides (remember them talking bout them in the thread)...

i was just wondering if anyone had-had issues with engine damage or anything like that being used on the smaller truck diesels??

and are they really nessasary on our little trucks?? i know they help with the semi's but dunno if they help on like the 250/350 diesels...

also anyone ever turned them on when they werent hauling just to hear their diesels make the bwaping noise for fun?? i always thought that might be fun if i got a diesel for a trip truck...

Exhaust brakes are are completely different animal than the jake brake on big rigs. I have the BD exhaust brake and it does make a big difference slowing the truck down. It doesn't make the big bwaping sound off the big rigs. Since the bd brake is air actuated it makes more sound when I turn the brake off releasing 45lbs of air & exhaust pressure. After running my exhaust brake for the last 45k I would say if used correctly they will not harm the engine. It works great when hauling the horse trailer around and saves the brakes for when I really need them.

darn.. i was hoping for that sound too....

the one id read about awhile back was an electric one.. but dont think that would make a difference..

have another question.. when i was looking around i saw some sites list the BD ones as an "OE Replacement".. does ford have them on there stock too?? granted i dont know what BD stands for.. but saw it listed when i looked up exhaust brakes earlier...

BD Power - Product: Exhaust Brakes
This is the bd brake. BD is a sponsor on this site.
They make a oe replacement for Dodge. I think Dodge is the only one to offer an exhaust brake on there pickup trucks.

I have read that exhaust brakes seem to shorten the life of the IDI diesels. Thankfully dropping into 3rd gear at 50mph sounds just like an exhuast brake anyhow.

IDI is the reason there is a powerstroke. IDI=Indirect injection. The diesels ford started putting in the 84 trucks, the 6.9 and then the 7.3 up until mid 94 when they switched to the powerstroke.

ahh... id always thought they were direct injected into they cylinders.... least that was the way they always described the diesels being when they taught them at school...

The newer ones are direct injected, the powerstrokes, the duramaxes and I think all the cummins were as well. I dont know about the GM 6.2/6.5 though.

The 4th paragraph has a good explanation.
