Need better gas mileage

I just bought a 1987 f150 custom 4x4 with the 4.9L straight 6 and a 4 speed tranny with a granny gear. Right now, I'm averaging 10 mpg in-town which doesn't seem right. Any suggestions about how I can increase that to what I'm finding others are getting (around 15 mpg)?

MAN thats horrid mileage for this engine. what is the rear axle ratio??? and that be damned I'd pull codes if I were you!!!! Sounds like you've got issues with that truck.

my 1987 F150 2wd Lwb LB RC with 300EFI got 18-19MPG hwy with a Tow package consisting of a heavy duty radiator/C6 Automatic/2.73:1 Rear axle ratio so unless you've got some rediculous gear ratio in that axle SOMETHING is up with that for sure, I'd suggest if money allows and since you'll get repeated use out of it going to Oreilly's auto parts and picking up a Equus 3145 Code Reader it will tell you whats going on or atleast point you in the right direction. It was right on the money with my new 1990 F150 Extended Cab with 300EFI/E4OD it's a short bed and has a 3.08:1 axle ratio it's also 2wd, no need for 4wd in the middle of the 4th largest city in the country lol

Neglected to mention that Oreilly's carries them for $29.99 + tax

Stock 93 F150 2wd 4.9L M5OD... I think 2.73's in the rear. Stock aluminum rims from a 92 4x4 with some puffed up tires, unsure what size. No pussie footn' here. Hard starts and stops and 80 on the highway all the time. 20 miles one way to work 1/2 highway other half Mi. lake town back roads dodgein' Bambi at 60-70 mph. 15mpg. I'm sure if I granny shifted and 55-60 mph highway I'd be around 18-20mpg. If I remember I'll check the unknowns and edit later

I'll add my $.02

1993 F150, 4.9, 5 speed, 3.08 gear, regular cab, short bed.

Modifications:
- K & N FIPK.
- Exhaust system. Walker #15022 cat, 2.5" intermediate pipe,Flowmaster 40 muffler (2.5" SI/ 2" DO), exits behind rear wheels.
- 2" rear shackle lowering.
- Tonneau cover.
- Electric Fan conversion.

Recent trip to Portland, Oregon and surrounding area, along with a return down US highway 101 through the redwoods coming home (4000 Miles total), average fuel mileage of 21 MPG. Most of this travel was at 55-60 on secondary highways, freeways at 65.

Other things that MAY have helped: Recently repacked the front wheel bearings, full 4 wheel brake job (pads, rotors, calipers, shoes, drums, rear wheel cylinders), recent alignment, new shocks all around, full tune up with new ignition components. NO codes to fix.

Not bad for a 17 year old classic Ford !!

Addendum: in daily use around here, mixed driving, I got 16 to 18 regularly before all the work mentioned above. And I happen to drive it rather gently out of respect, and I know how much major repairs can (and do) cost.

My 94 RC SB F150 4x2 300 5 speed, 3.55s 235/75/15 tires averaged 17.5 mpg. Worst was 14.1, best was 20.5. 3900lb
My 95 SC SB F150 4x2 5speed, 3.08s 235/75/15 tires averages 16.2 Worst 13.7, best 20.1. 4200lb
Using A/C costs about 1.5 mpg in city driving. Best mpg is at 55-60 mph

The 95 does see more city driving and I drive it faster (75 vs 70) on the Interstate.
Big surprise was when I hauled my 4100lb 5th wheeler. Driving at 50-55 with no O/D it got 13.
BTW my 95 has a bit more power than the 94 and it is in much better condition.
regards
rikard
