The Project What Axle?

I bought a project from a guy that started the process of putting a 69 body on a 76 4 x4 chassis. The body has the 69 vin# on it so I can't find the rear axle info from the vin#.

The tag on the rear axle has the following numbers:

WFE - 3 5KD
3L50 9 389E

Anyone able to translate that for me?

Thanks

Only two axles available for the rear of this 4x4 truck. If it is a 1/2 ton truck you will have a 9 inch ford rear axle, and if it is a 3/4 ton it will have a dana 60.
That being said, it appears to have a tag that would indicate a 3.50 ratio with a limited slip.

WFE-C3 = Ford 9" / 3.50-1 / T4 = 4 Pinion Traction Lock.

There are two different versions of this rear end. The difference is in the Differential Bearings/Races.

Mid-year 1969 Ford went to the "slim line" design roller bearings.

If the last 6 digits of the VIN are from serial number J30.001...the rear end has these bearings/races.

Thanks, that helps a lot. Unfortunately the VIN# is from the 69 body which is on the 76 chassis. So I will go with the diff tag info for now, it is a 1/2 ton.

Pretty stoked if it is a limited slip, this thing needs some work but cost me almost nothing and will be a great off road vehicle and a donor for some body parts for the 68.

Ford trucks rule!
