Wanting to regear and add a locker?

I have an 03 F-250 with a 5.4 and 35s. The 35s are killing me on power. I have a 3.73 and a LS thats past its days. I am wanting to regear this and add some sort of locker or LS. The question i have is that im wanting to do this myself. I have never regeared a rear end before but i do have mechanical knowledge. How hard is it to do for the first time. Is there something that i really should worry about. Thanks.

You should know what you're getting into before you start. It's not impossible to do yourself, but it's among the hardest jobs for the shadetree. The gears have to be set up exactly within spec or you will trash them in a few miles. You need some special tools and a good shop or garage to do the work in. You don't just buy the new gears, bolt them in and go.

Since these are integral carriers, this is an under-the-truck job. Gotta lift? Dial indicator? Hefty torque wrench? Inch-lb. torque wrench? Ability to do it twice if you turn out a howler?
