Question about ignition switch:

I know the ignition will allow you to listen to the radio, windows, etc. for about ten minutes after you turn the key off.

Is there an accessory position on the ignition switch? It just seems I have one click and then start. To use the first click would turn on the fuel pump for the 6.4.

On my last trip I found my notebook computer works best in the truck on truck battery on the Verizon National access/broadband network.

Comments please.

Yes, when you put the key in, click the key backwards (towards you) once and you will be in the accessory position. Then you can listen to the radio and roll your windows up and down as much as you want, as long as you want.

brian 42:

Thanks for your help. Every time I go on a trip, I say I will solve the mystery of the accessory switch on my truck. This time I followed up on it, and went out to my truck and tried to find out why it will not give me an accessory position.

I too always thought ALL cars/trucks had the accessory position with the key backwards. NOT SO on my truck.

When all else fails, READ THE BOOK.

I just did. Again went to my truck and problem solved.

So simple. And sometimes I am so dumb. FOUR POSITION IGNITION SWITCH. First position is off; 2nd position is accessory; 3rd position is on; and 4th position activates the starter.

When you turn the key on you can barely feel the accessory position, but that is where the book says it should be, and that is where it is located.

Drove the truck 15,500 miles over 18 months, and found out how to use the accessory switch.

Thanks again for your reply.

I'm surprised, most domestic vehicles have the accessory postion behind the key removal position. I swear mine does, now I have to check! My wife's Hyundai Santa Fe is the same as you described: OFF-ACC-ON-START. Now I have to go find out if I'm ACC-OFF-ON-START or OFF-ACC-ON-START. It's amazing how it's the little things that just gnaw at you...

Please let me know what you find out on your vehicle. I too was surprised as I kept turning backwards and then said, oh hell, I must have the steering wheel in the wrong position.

Finally, after your email I wanted to resolve in my mind. Sometimes we take so much for granted. I did in this case. I do love my 2008 truck, even with the absurd MPG, as I learn so many new features, years after delivery.

I am glad, because it takes away my desire for a new truck. I have bot a new Ford almost every other year for 8 years. Time I slow down.

THX again,

Just checked. My early '03 is ACC-LOCK (key removal)-OFF-ON-START. The OFF position doesn't really have a detente to stop it, it's just a gray area the key slides over before it gets to ON. It unlocks the steering wheel and lets me take the tranny out of park but no power. ACC is one click back towards the driver (away from OFF and ON) when I put the key in (radio and windows).
