Alt. or Gen.

Ok I have had the truck a little bit now and the whole time I thought I had a Alt. because it is a 12V system and to me it looked like a Alt. but I was working changing the belt and took a look at the manual and man do they look the same. Is there a easy way to tell them apart that I am just not seeing, still have a feeling it is a Alt. but want to be sure? Thanks a ton.

I don't know for sure, but every generator that I've seen is longer (more "tube like") maybe six or eight inches long, while the alternators I've always seen are more narrow or think, maybe 3-4 inches thick, if that makes any sense.
