What kind of engine? What year?
In general, that sounds like a wiring problem. The power to the coil should be on at all times; during cranking, it should see full 12V from the battery, and when not cranking but key on, it should see about 9V, with the power going through a resistor. Most other power like accessories (except lights) should turn off during cranking. So if you see a spark just as you stop cranking, it means either the direct connection to the coil is broken, or you are trying to power it from an accessory line.
