Gold and silver are two of the best conductors around!
During World War II, the Battle ship USS Nevada (which got underway at the attack on Pearl Harbor, and was beached to save her from sinking in the main channel of the harbor) was repaired and reconstructed in the US prior to going back to the war.
One interesting note from the Chief Engineer was that the Main Electrical Distribution Panel (some 8 feet by 15 feet) was removed because the copper in it was so war critical, and it was replaced with a panel made of solid silver - which was less in demand.
It is unknown to this day if the battleship, which was used at Bikini for the postwar Atomic Bomb tests, and sank being towed back to the US, went down with the treasure.
In the late 1970 and 1980s Yamaha made all their stereo circuitry out of gold as well!
Gold rings are another culprit in burning off fingers during electrical work.
