blowing coolant

My cousin has a 6.4 with a sct tuner and dpf delete exhaust. He was pulling his goosneck on the tow setting and it started puking antifreeze out of the rad. cap. Has anyone else had this problem?

I'd say he blew a headgasket. And guess what. Ford isn't going to warranty that with those mods on it, I don't think.

either headgasket or failure somewhere else in cooling system as larry says. Ford will be able to see the tuner even if he takes it back to stock so be prepared to pay.

That is the common result of a blown head gasket or an EGR cooler. Could certainly be something else but those are the most common "problems" that cause it to puke. So far HG's have not been an issue on the 6.4 even with the really fast tuners.

Chances are if he takes the truck in without the DPF in place they will not honor the warranty. If he returns everything to stock he may be ok. The jury is out about just how much Ford is able to detect.

Keep us posted on the problem as well as the dealers willingness to repair.

To this date no dealer has detected a spartan tuner. Some district reps have even tried to look with thier fancy laptops and found nothing.

As to the issue of puking coolant. He either has bad EGR coolers or HG issues. Rumor has it a handful of bad HG were used in assembly of some vehicles. Dont let the dealer tell him its a bad cap or an issue with the degaus bottle.....bc its a crock of *****

I have had the same problem so it took it in, first it was the venturi tee that blew, then I get it back then a little while later it does it again so back to the dealer I go they then said my egr cooler was cracked so then they replaced it. A little while later again it blew out more coolant so again off to the dealer they now tell me it is the HG on the #1 cylinder is blown, and I have no mods on it and it has only 12k miles on it. Thought you guys would like to know what I'm dealing with.

Welcome to FTE David. Head gasket failure on the 6.4L is very rare but any engine that has seen an overheating issue could.

There are trucks out there starting to blow head gaskets. ARP, thank goodness, has the studs out to make them better. Like powerstroke03 mentioned, there is a rumor out that it was just a bad bunch of HG's. Either way, the aftermarket is picking up steam with the 6.4L and we should have some actual limits of the stock components shortly.

So I wonder if these studs were limited to job1 trucks or maybe a limited amount of job 2's?

There are plenty of these trucks making more than 500 horsepower and being abused on a regular basis with no HG issues at all. I would say anyone that experiences a problem with a HG either over heated the engine or just had bad luck.

My 6.0 had a HG failure. I know for some that may seem par for the course but when the head was removed we found one of the alignment dowels was not pressed all the way in and prevented the head from being properly torqued from the factory. Just bad luck and a 10 cent part that failed a $10k engine.

The 6.4 does not have a design flaw when it comes to blowing HG's so any failure is out of the norm.

New update on my truck

I just got a call from the dealer about my truck and now they told me when they went to put on the new HG's they went to torque the heads and found that the block is stripped and now they have a order for a new block for my truck. Now if I'm right I have to go through the break in proses again. Yay me

Now how long should I drive it until I can pull a camping trailer again? And how long is the normal break in period?
