Drive Belt removal help

I need to replace my alternator on my '99 F-150 with a 5.4 and a/c and I'm wondering what's the proper way to release the tension on the drive belt? I have a 1/2 inch socket wrench and have tried cranking the tension pulley counter clockwise to release, but can't get it to go. Am I going about this the right way and just need to get better leverage or do you release it a different way? Thanks for your help.
