3 Speed Transmission Question

Does anybody know if a 3 speed tranny from a '61-'66 will fit a '53 flatty? The guy says he has the bell housing as well.

i think the input shaft might be longer than the flatty's but i don't know for sure . i do know that the bellhousing's and the bolt pattern are different from anything else . in my case i took out the oe three speed as it had a bad synchro and bill / number dummy informed me that a tranny i had from a 55 f350 with a y block would fit it . seems all the tranny's from 53 - 56 are interchangeable , but the passenger car's have a longer tailshaft .the big t98 four gear in my 53 now required locating a different bellhousing too . tranny mounting bolt pattern is much larger . maybe a local tranny shop can tell ya something if one of the guru's here don't reply . p.s. mine is a 8ba 53 1/2 ton . it's in the avatar .

I'm sure there some combination that will allow you adapt the transmission to the flathead. But there is a good chance the newer transmission is longer and so you will probably have to modify the transmission mounting and drive shaft .

Let us know how it turns out!!

If its from a short bed truck 61-62 with the slip in yoke it will bolt to the 53 flatty v8 bellhousing and work fine. The shifter cover on the 57-62 transmissions is different than the 53-56. There are two cast bosses on the shifter cover for the clutch linkage to attach to. These have been eliminated from the 57-62 transmissions.
You will need the flathead v8 bellhousing as the one the guy has for the 61-66 will not fit.

1963: Ford introduced the Type 3.03 all syncromesh 3 speed manual transmission.

Initially installed in F100/250's & Galaxies, some Fairlanes.
